I'm with those who think it should be mandatory to retest for your driver's licensing. Doesn't California require the written test every 2 years and the driving every 4?

I was 17 (a few years back, lol) and working for a local grocery store carrying out groceries. Well, once we had this little old lady - had to be in her mid to late 80s - driving a big old LTD come into the parking lot. As she was headed into her chosen parking spot, she slammed into the curb, jumped over it and smashed fully into one of the newspaper machines lining the wall and completely smeared it into what resembled a crushed beer can. She then dropped it into reverse, backed off the curb, shut it off and got out and walked inside the store as if nothing happened. It's possible she had Parkinson's, as her head wobbled on her shoulders like a bobblehead doll!

See, here in Oklahoma, once you get your driver's license you'll have it for the rest of your life without being required to take another test either written or driving. Unless it is suspended or expired for 4 years, you'll always have your license. Scary huh?

  2. Glad there was no one injured !! Getting angry, hostile, or going to jail would not change a thing. I had an incident happen the end of march, if getting angry would have fixed it I would have, but as it wouldn't, why agrivate myself. Took a month to get things straightened out, thank God for an honest adjuster. The attached pictures are of my place in FL.

  3. Just a note on "unintended Accel": Toyota went to great lengths to NOT blame the driver. Audi blamed the driver. Audi sales plummeted after their episode.

If you are holding the wheel, YOU are responsible for knowing how to control the car.

As for this, I'd simply tell the insurance adjuster: "I want a LeMans in my drive, in black. I don't care HOW it gets there, but it'd better be in my name."

No air bag on the Lexus was deployed because the impact was at a slow speed and or the Pontiac absorbed the impact.
Hopefully the Pontiac and Ford are covered by full value classic car insurance.

You're right. The lexus was OBVIOUSLY traveling at low speed as it flew the air and pushed the pontiac the width of the parking spot.

I don`t think it will ever buff out!!!!

  9. Biggest reason for the damage is the Lexus on that curb put it over the top of the frame and lower body of the Pontiac, if they were on the same level the damage wouldn't be nearly as severe looking. The Lexus had to still be doing 30-40 MPH when it hit, too.

Dang Grits, don't go gettin yourself in trouble over this. The post was a bit unrealistic but still. Be cool buddy.

  11. Ok, I'm sorry ;), I fixed it, but dang !

  12. Couldn't agree more. Throttle gets stuck, pop it into neutral. It's surprising how many people don't know to do this. They don't teach stuff like this in driver's ed. apparently.

Ha, he called me a liberal.

OK, so it turned out to be a middle-aged woman of presumably Asian descent. So now we can resort to racial and gender stereotypes instead, or just make a blanket statement like "more likely a throttle problem", to which I would agree to the latter. Except that I would probably bet that the throttle problem was more related to her foot on it than some type of latent mechanical defect.

Though I see you have a vested interest in a statement like I made, I hope you realize that I don't mean that older Americans should have their driving privileges uniformly revoked. But I don't think it's unreasonable for ALL people to go back for a check up every now and again to make sure they're in proper health to operate a motor vehicle. Even for myself, my vision is not what it was before law school, and now I wear glasses, though my license doesn't affirmatively state that I need them because I just renew it every year by mail.

Drivers who are unfit physically to be on the road are a real danger. Case law has shown that epileptics can be held criminally and civilly liable for accidents they cause if they have a seizure behind the wheel. I worked on case where an 80+ year old driver couldn't physically get into his GMC Suburban. When he went to work, he needed to have his son pick him up and place him in the truck, and then when he arrived, one of the employees had to carry him out. How quick do you think he'd be to the brake if a child was in the street? What if it was your grand-daughter?

Again, glad everybody seems to be OK or at worst a little shaken up. The Poncho and the 40 are tough losses, but life will go on.

Funny how those throttles stick wide open when shitheads that shouldn't be driving can't tell the difference between the long skinny pedal and the wide pedal...

OMG! What a freakin' idiot. If I was driving that Lexus (which I would never) I would've swerved atleast, before plowing up $100K +.

Nope, shure don't. What they teach us in the D.E in school is the signs and how to do proper turns and that kind of stuff. Heck, they don't even let us use real cars. Just a realistic simulation type of game..

  18. I bet she'll find some lawyer and sue the owners of the Poncho and the '40 because she suffered injuries to her hand from the crash and won't be able to text anymore.
It wouldn't surprise me if it happens since it happened in Kalifornistan.

At least its a new lexus, probably with some good ins. I got hit once by a dumb kid in a crappy toyota with no insurance. Left with a pile of smashed, worthless junk and a huge bill.

Not only do I believe that so many of these cruise nights that are sprouting about across our country are miserably mismanaged by the municipalities that host them, but lately I've also been made aware of how these same municipalities that have these events, supposedly to boost "commerce" in their town, are often guilty of setting up "speed traps" to ticket unsuspecting "out of town" hot rodders who are coming and going from their events... Tricks like posting 15mph speed limits coming down from steep bridges and hills, etc, have become the norm-- That ain't right-- If you go through all the bother to clean up your ride and drive it to some town's cruise night (so their local 7-11 can sell more soda pop and chips), the last thing you deserve is gettin' had by that same town's speed trap....

The H.A.M.B., the "thinking" hot rodders' web site...
