well a friend and i dug into my wifes 61 galaxie tonight, we got it running, and we got the brakes going but we are having a problem with the ******, its acting like its in neutral no matter what gear its in, park, drive, reverse. im just lost, does anyone have any ideas. we droped the pan and everything looks good from what i can tell.....i need help!!!! lol
I just got my wifes 65 running a couple of weeks ago. The same thing happened to me, it turrned out to just be very low on fluid. Its sounds stupid but it was not drained to have the filter put in as i did that upside down on the bench. It did'nt make any noise or try to move at all it just sat and revved. Hopefully its not as bad as you think.
Had you ever driven it before? Do you know for a fact it should work? What have you actually done to the car? You did check the fluid level, right? A lot of time when old Fords sit for prolonged time the Converter will drain into the pan. You need to put them in N to pump it back in before it will ingauge. The Wizzard
Try the fluid check first. If it's full the seals may be dried out and leaking internally. Before I got mine fixed it had so sit in the drive idling to get warm and then it would work.
Have you removed the selector shaft ? I once did on a PG and got it all wrong when I reinstalled it. You wrote that it acted as in Neutral when you had it in Park, that´s what got me thinking.
ya the fluid level was good, the car had been sitting sinde the end of 09. but its now working....its sitting at a friends house and he said he started it up, reved it a few times and now everything works?....
When automatics sit for a long time they drain back into the pan. Not uncommon at all. Make sure you re check the fluid level now as it will have circulated and the level should have dropped.
