I think road signs are made with a "reflective glass bead" material that can be added to paints like flake - if you could stand the reflection / blinding other drivers at night! Gary
i just flaked my car about a month ago.i put 4 coats of .004 strato blue{from paint with pearls}.the 5th coat i put about a tespoon of old crushed glass in the mix.man did the glass really make it pop!!!!!in the sun it looks like its about a 1/4'' deep.it also has a prizum effect.the only problem i had with it was i didnt change tips and the glass was .50.it wanted to clog alittle but it was so worth it.my computer crashed last week and i lost all of the pics.if you have any more questions just let me know.
if you can see flake from a picture taken from ten ft away just imagin what it would look like in person with full sun!!!
That is a new one for me - Way Kool - will have to give it a try sometime. Just flaked my 36 so will have to be another project.
My dad snagged a big jar of crushed glass back in the '60's. Used it in a lot of jobs, probably still has some left, too. Need to call him.
I've used crushed mirror. The gun needs to have a big hole in the tip. And it takse a done of clear to burry it. It soesn't lay out as well as flake but it does make a pretty cool paint job. I've only used it on bikes I would think that something as big as a car would be work.
Murano pearl when it was available, was made with crushed colored glass from the famous glass blowing Island of Murano in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. It was suspended in lead salt, which is why it is now a banned substance!
I did a 69 Camaro, like Teddy said, but not with crushed glass. All my sources told me it was not sold any more, due to safety concerns. I did wind up using sign beads, got them from Sid Moses @ Seelig Custom Paint. I needed something that would punch up a white paint job, in the sun, but not look like dirt or dust in the shade. Well, it really worked! Added a brilliant sparkle in the sun! Couldn't see any dark bits to block the white in other light. This was quite a few years back, before you could get transparent flake, like Abalone, and others. And the owner didn't want the subtlety of Pearl. It did need a big tip on my gun...used a primer gun, no screen in it...as this was also before the resurgence of flake, and I couldn't find an 'old' flake gun. You'll have to find some olds stock of crushed glass if you really want it, I think...I'll buy any extra if you find it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anybody ever tried glass beads such as used in a media blaster? I spilled a bit on the floor and it was sparkling like diamonds when the sun hit it.
I tought the same thing about the glass beads from the blast cab. Tryed it and it was dissapointing. Mabye they are too small of a bead.
A buddy used to do line painting, (the stuff along the sides and down the center of the highway). He says it's nothing more than a fast-dry colored paint, with glass beads blown over the top for reflectivity. I'm reasonably sure that most of you have seen newly striped roadways at night. Roger
ive got a couple jars i got from a guy that stopped painting in the late 60s. Use a huge tip, i think i had a 3.0 laying around and then a whole shitload of clear. I think i sprayed 5 coats of highbuild clear then wetsand then wait a few days, sprayed 3 more on then sand buff. It sucked, and make sure youre spraying in a booth or your shop will look like you murdered a pixie.
They still sell crushed glass in craft stores. Go to ebay and type crushed glass, they sell some there too, though I'm not sure its sized right for spraying.
About 10 years ago, I helped design a SEMA car for GM and it was a candy-ish red with very small bits of crushed glass in the paint from BASF I think....When it was inside it looked good, but once you rolled it outside it was spectacular...I seem to remember the paint being very pricey, but it was 10 years ago...
the stuff your looking for is called diamond dust and it is awesome it adds alot of flash to the paint without toning it, it's great, it's actually crushed mirrors i don't think crushed glass works, and be carefull when you spray it, that stuff will turn your lungs to hamburger!!!
I painted several cars back in the 70's and 80's with original glass flake, it came in silver or gold and in fine or medium flake. It doesn't look anything like a metal flaked bass boat. Looks like a million diamonds shimmering in the sun. I was googling to see if anyone still supplied it and saw all the post on here about it. Looks great in any color.
Hadn't even thought about crushed glass in a very long time. In the late 60s had a Norton MC. Had a guy in Adrian Mi. believe it was Larrys Cycle do a paint job. very wild purple he used crushed glass in the clear man did that pop in the sun!
I still got a Mayo jar of SPINDRIFT from back in the 60's, MMM. Maybe I'll restore my muscle bike this summer after all.
There was a local guy that did some crushed glass, Woody's in New Britian, Ct probably around the early/mid 70's..At nite it [58 or so Vette I think] was quit spectacular as it cruised by, looked like tiny flash bulbs going off in the paint; way more spark than flake'..I don't remember seeing another [at least a driver] since then...

A friend's Rivera is painted with a late model Lincoln color that has "diamond dust" in the factory mix. The paint was VERY expensive but really pops in the sun. I actually thought it might be diamond dust but the above explanation makes more sense.
tell us more about your opel! back in the 80's I knew a couple mechanics who built a 68 kadett with a 428 pontiac with a huge engine setback and slicks sticking out just like yours. it was a wheelie machine like yours. too cool!!!!
