Colby Avenue. Most hotrodders outside the Northwest never heard of it. This was our Van Nuys our Sunset Blvd. If you had a hotrod there was no wondering what you were doing Friday and Saturday night. You came home from high school or work and got your ride ready. Your buddies would be calling soon asking what time we heading to Colby. Every town had one, if not, the next town over had one. The boulevard, the place to show off your car. Do we want to stop at Herfy's or Mr. Bill's and slam a burger and some greasy fries or Gilly's for a sub to go? We don't want to get there to early let the crowd grow a little 9 or 10 is fine. You could always tell a good cruise night turnout because you had a "landmark". That spot where if traffic was backed up this far it was going to be good. Glad we put 5 bucks in the tank. A couple hours of cruising and trying to "pickup" the same girls that 50 other guys were hitting on and you headed over to see who was gathering at Checkered Flag Tavern on Airport Road to find out who really had the "Fastest car in the Valley". Detroit had Woodward, we had Colby. Like most strips ours lasted until early/mid 80s and then succumbed to road blocks every weekend and excessive enforcement brought on by residents and businesses who had enough. Well Colby's heritage is back with a "controlled cruise" and a car show that has really blossomed in the past couple years. We arrived 6:30 a.m. to a line of hotrods 8 blocks long. Going thru the gate I asked the attendant how many cars and he said 800 and still more coming. So that is a brief history and without further delay I will post a sampling of cars (pre 65 mainly).
Well everyone that's a sample. I hope you enjoy a little in pictures as much as I did in person. Thank you.
You better buy a lottery ticket. You have great picking ability. Out of all my posted pictures the 38 is the only one that was a good friend of my Dad. Thank you.
