You should have heard the thing....when he was doing his burnout everyone came over to the fence to see what was making that crazy noise. The thing was wailin' like a banshee while this young guy did a crazy John Force-style burnout!lol! You could see sweat on the brow of some of the mild street small block guys, and the import guys just ran and hid. They got very scarce after this dude started making p***es...lol! I am never impressed nor unimpressed by cubic inch displacement. I just like anything that takes fuel and explodes it! It's all good!
I've gone backward from what people say you will. I've gotten rid of all my big block stuff (unless you count the galaxie 352- it's kinda small?). I got tired of trying to cool the beasts, the odd handling from the extra weight and the awful mileage. I did turn a lower ET, but I only go to the strip once or twice a year. As long as I have 3 pedals I have fun. Winding out my 283 and 327s is a great day for me. Somebody posted about the fun of driving a slow car fast compared to a fast car slow. I concur. Posted from my office while pretending to work!
...I think... It's like the boss hoss bikes running big and small block chevs, make me yawn, anyone can put an enormous engine in something and go fast but it takes a bit more effort and skill to screw something small together well enough to do the same thing, and more impressive.... Though big lazy cubes are awesome..... Haha
Most of my cars have been stock oldies with open exhaust. Straight eight Buicks, flathead Fords, old Chevy sixes, etc. They're all great. Shoot, even my 212ci flathead 6cyl Hudson coupe was a blast, and sounded good with open exhaust...hummin' down a country 2-laner on a warm summer evening. There's a satisfaction in simply making any engine run well with good tuning. It's not all about m***ive cubic inches and mega-hp and "bragging rights". So much of it has to do with style too, and the enjoyment of old iron. I'm not in compe***ion with anybody, and don't wanna be. They can take their one upmanship mentality somewhere else...lol. I just wanna have fun.
There is a ton of satisfaction when you get em runnin' just right, isn't there? It's like solving some kind of riddle... And have you done any experimenting with pipe length?A friend of mine used to run straight pipes on a 270hp 283 in a '57 Bel Air years ago,and with the pipes extended just a hair past the rear bumper it sounded like magic....not obnoxiously loud, but just soooooo damn good! I love the sound of a high reving sbc. A bbc with a big cam sounds pretty good too but nothing sounds better then a well built Nailhead. I'm building a 486ci Nailhead for my 34. Cant wait to hear it the first time should sound pretty good
