Hot Rods Curbspeed Coupe. "Holy Hell" 10/4/2020

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by curbspeed, Dec 19, 2010.

  1. Thanks for good words. I worked on the car for a while today trying to fix the DS wheel well. Got more to do. Seems like the hard work takes so damn long to do right. I'll keep plugging along.

Dude, you need a new Whip-Cracker! Some of us are waiting to see the finished product so we can get our motivation up. I dig the taillights. Don't forget were counting on you!

I wasn't going to say it but I'm glad someone did. :D

  6. Elmer. You gonna beat me up? I worked on it again today. Decided to deviate from the body repairs and work on geting my original 57 Olds J-2 intake with matching carbs tore down. I have the carbs soaking and I blasted the intake. Cleaned up pretty well. I need to know it it would work out to chrome this intake? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Wonder if it will stay looking good? I also need a source for the choke that is pictured. It fell apart when I was cleaning it. Was really crusty inside. These are 2G carbs.

Ever thought of having Russ meeks coat it. The intake will look like polished aluminum, just a thought.

I can't imagine that Chroming would be an issue as long as the buffer was reputable. I would hate for them to tweak the machined surfaces. A lot of guys chrome Water pumps and such so I bet it would look great! I would be concerned with the heat from the head bluing it but maybe there's not nearly as much up top and on the sides.

I say go for it!!! If not paint everything gold like it was from the factory. That's always a cool option.

  9. Intake will not be gold. It will either be black or chrome. Motor color is already started with Hugger Orange. I will post a pic of my heads and chrome valve covers tomorrow.
Here is a pic of the scavenger pipes that I have already had made up by my friend Russ Meeks of Portland, Or. They will be used in my header build and then chromed out with some type of baffles in them. I think they look really sweet. They got a really nice bell on them. He said this die was used on the Orange Crate back in the day

    Looking AWESOME.

  11. Yes I did think of that Steve but I am really on a chrome kick on this build. I need to know if the intake will blue over time if I chrome it. Anyone every do this and know the result? I think it would look really badass if it will work. Did you start on your 3 window yet? Neat car for sure.

  13. I'm lovin' this build. I can't wait to see how you fashion your exhaust; it's gonna look killer in chrome.

    Scavenger pipes?! TOO COOL!

  15. Another vote for powder coat! I worked in a Jap motorcycle dealership for a couple years. They had a guy that did P/C and he had a powder that looked just like polished aluminum. Really durable stuff, too! he also had a clear that he could shoot ofer beadblasted aluminum that preserved the look!

Dale, we used to have a customer's car that had a chromed U-Fab manifold that looked good after 50+ years... do it!

BTW, scavengers = cold illin', blood.

Hey Dale, found your build thread here. I may have a choke housing you can have.
Also, started on fixing your shop heater, should be done tomorrow evening.

I still think that intake would rule Jet-Hot coated! Right color, right amount of sheen.

Dale, I hace the tool that belled the pipes on the 7-11 you are welcome to use it p/m me @ animalmike@charter.net

  20. hotrod3434. Thanks. Look at post #283 here on this thread. I had them done by the world famous Russ Meeks already. Thank anyways. I am really happy with what I got. Are you the same Mike that was looking for the original 7-11 coupe about 5 or 6 years ago at Bakersfield? If so we met and you let me sit in the car at that time. You probably would not remember me though.
Here is a picture of the finished 371 heads that will go on the car, I just love the interplay between the Hugger Orange and the dimpled valve covers that I got from "SinisterSpeed"(Rory Forbes). Thanks Rory. They turned out pretty good after a few hours of work. I still need two more small Eelco peanut breathers(2 1/4") for them if anyone has a couple of them laying around. They are diecast and chrome.

  21. Thanks John, I do need that heater back . It got too cold here for me. (I'm such a wuss) I appreciate the choke housing stuff. I was going to go down to Merle's today and see if they had one but I'll wait to see what you got. Talk to you tonight.

  22. Looks good! I just found this thread so I will have to come back and read the whole thing later. Now that Marcus has his done I need another '34 to watch. lol

Hey Dale, yeah we found several and now have enough to get four good ones. Jack

  29. Got some work done this weekend on the coupe. I have been looking at the dash I wanted to put in the car hanging on the garage wall for quite some time thinking it would be a fun project to tackle and have a change of pace from some of the other stuff that I have doing. I got this 1938 Ford Deluxe dashboard from my longtime buddy Steve Gilligan(couverkid here on the hamb) quite a few years back. We made a trade to help his dad out on one of his cars I think if I remember right. Thanks Steve! I had a mint stock 34 dash that I traded off for cash and my Bell steering wheel awhile back so I had no choice but to move ahead with my plans for the 38 dash. My first hotrod was a 39 standard coupe and I love the dashes in these cars. Something about the cathedral style window details in the center of them just turns me on. I used this dash because I had to have the window crank out mechanism in the same place as the ealier cars. The dash had to be modified so that crank hole would be in the same place
I wanted this modification to look like it belonged in the car and I think I succeeded(at least in my mind). I didn't have to cut much off the ends. In fact I actually bent the ends around to meet the A-pillar and just added a small amount of filler metal to the top edge to make it straight across the windshield line. I'll let the pictures tell the story. I will cut the gauge holes out tomorrow after I get a proper size holesaw for one of the gauges. I am using a old set of winged S-W gauges that came from the original Black Widow roadster. They have some patina that I don't mind a bit. I will be building an accesorry underdash panel for 3 of the gauges that will blend in with the style of the dash. Here are the pics of my weekends work. I will be chroming the strip with the fasteners at the leading edge of the dash. It will finish it off better.
I will also be taking the Ford clock and sending to a place the reworks gauges. I am having the face changed to look like a winged S-W clock. Should be a nice conversation piece when done.
I need a locking glovebox pull if anyone has one that they could let go!!!!!!! Thanks for looking.
