I don't know where you got your information....but unless it was some radio announcer hyping a match race, the term "plastic fantastic" was never the vernacular of racers, nor was "burning the hides." (might have been a regional thing, but not on the West Coast).

Well, one thing I've learned from being in this drag racin' business, is yes, there is occasionally an awful wide divide between the language and lingo of the drag strip culture between the east and west coast-- I'm not sure why that is, and I don't even know if in most matters it's necessarily a good thing or healthy thing, but whatever the case, it absolutely does exist, that simply can't be denied...

  4. Hate to say it my friends but I heard them called that in my youth out here in So Cal. (Grew up in the foothills of Duarte, could see Irwindale from my house, now work a mile down the street) Might not have been common but definitely heard it before. And I agree it wasn't the racers, but fans in the stands - along with "Boilin' the Hides" which I swear I first heard over the PA at OCIR.

Larry, I used to know a guy around here that had a red primered anglia with an L-78 and a glide, that bracket raced it, and ran it on the streets quite a bit. Went out of shape 11.0s.

Not a bad looking push truck either. Theres a guy around here that has a red & white '57 ranch wagon with an FE and a set of mint Cragar Screamers(remember those?) since I was a kid. Man, that would sure look pulling your digger.

    George,
This one was a fairly mild 327/4 speed. Ran mid 11s/120mph at Green Valley. It went pretty straight.
I still have it, got everything to build a good 355 and an old Nash 5 speed for it.

Thats what you are going to use the cross-ram on, right? Buddy of mine has a Smokey Ram, we were going to use it on a 355 for his '65 Chevelle wagon, but he has fallen on hard times, so its on hold. Too bad, I was looking forward to playing around with that intake, never ran one before. Maybe I should try to buy it off him...

I saw a picture of Vance Hunt taken a few years ago and I think he was still wearing the same hat. (G)

Here's a shot from a "modern" nostalgia race where a northeastern drag racing legend showed up. I do an extensive interview with Jim "Fireball" Shores. The same Jim "Fireball" Shores from the golden "Shores & Hess" Gasser era-- And of course the same Jim "Fireball" Shores who later campaigned the legendary "Fireball Vega" Funny Cars. I took the time with Shores to go "time traveling" into his incredible drag racing history. Jim goes through his scrap book, the one I'm holding, and shows us some "peculiar" press clips and shares a couple of priceless stories, like the time one of his Gassers surpassed a strip's shut down area and "flew" into the woods. From the Funny Car Reunion Raw dvd. Somebody's got to document this precious history, or it will forever remain forgotten. I love doing this service to preserve our sport's history and heritage.

Happiness is a Nitro burning Fuel Altered launching off the line like gangbusters! Al "Mousie" Marcellus brings the "Winged Express" all the way to Englishtown... "Iron" Mike Boyd fills the seat once occupied by "Wild" Willie Borsch... I was fortunate enough to do a touching and emotional interview with Al "Mousie" Marcellus. Gotta love the Altereds!

Another coined phrase, or phrases that was often heard with OCIR/Irwindale radio ads with Steve Evans ; "It will be like a fiberglass forest in the pits."
and "Plastic bodied replicas of Deeeetrooooit iron." "And now race fans the bodies come down and the engines fire up as we prepare our first two combatants." "
