The Sidewinder 1958-60

The active So Cal Cacklefests were once littered with most of the nostalgia entries from all over. The 2017 version started out as a reconstruction of the original all aluminum version as shown in the earlier post. The version of the Sidewinder in its latest phase is one from a later 2017 Cacklefest and at the Lions Drag Strip Museum opening in 2019.

This sleek race car has/had a fascinating drag racing history and was a favorite of many So Cal drag racing enthusiasts and racers. Since it was usually located at Joe Mailliard's Speed Shop in the Westside of Long Beach, we had instant access to the original race car whenever we went over to that speed shop for information, parts or the latest Drag News paper.

Seeing it in 2017 was the first time I had seen a real live version of it since 1960. It was a step back in time and made the goosebumps show up at the sight and sound of the sleek race car.

It was refurbished, detailed, and brought back to life as the 5 Cycle Special by Jack Gillette.
