    Richard D & Bowtie29,

Thanks for the links. Looks like there are a lot of reinforcement schemes that will work. Time to look at the angle iron collection.

For you guys who have added a gearmotor, what is the best roller speed? I have seen a few running at 3 RPM. (My guess feed speed of 24"/ minute) How fast is too fast?

Is there a need for a reverse when rolling or does that help create scrap.

  5. You will find reverse comes in handy if the panel won't fit in the machine to reach a part of the picture/pattern and you have to feed it from the other side. Sometimes you may need to feed from both sides to roll a pair of panels with mirror images. Hard to explain but take my word for it, you will need the reverse function sooner or later, not to roll lines backwards but to roll them forward from the other side (told you it was hard to explain). I don't think you can have a motor that's too fast because you control the speed with the foot pedal and only go as fast as you need.

AAAaaaahhhhh, would you think I was an asshole if I wanted to keep that one to myself???

Its the same process that BigWigRaceCars uses for his diamond pleats, at least I think it is. Lets see what he says first. Its his trick, I just figured it out.

No I wouldn't think that at all. But I have tried it before, and the results were not what I was looking for. Maybe a hint, aw come on please! That's cool I'll keep working on it.

I don't mind sharing some techniques at all.

For the pleats, I use a tipping die on top. The bottom die has a very shallow V cut in it, probably 1/2 inch wide but only about .040" deep. And, I don't even run the dies at full depth. I turn the crank maybe 1/3 of a turn after contact with the panel. I can take pictures of the dies tonight when I get back home if needed. I use the same dies for doing pleats, diamond tuck, spider webs, and checkered flags. Some examples below:

    There ya go!

My way is close, but I use a flat lower roll, with 4-5 layers of electrical tape. it will warp the hell out of it, but when you work it out over your knee it gives the pleats a little more dome.

Nice work on the door panel!!!

Here's a few more recent ones. I posted these previously on one of the Friday Art shows, I think, but they probably ought to be in this thread...

What's it take $$$$ to get a basic setup to try playing with this type of work?

Maybe good be arranged,, PM me if your in the market!!

How much your bead roller setup cost depends on who you get it from, mine is a Mittler Bros, very high quality and ready to run right out of the box. You'll also need a few different sets of rolls to go along with it. the roller itself is $625 and comes with one set of rolls. I have 6 sets of rolls, including tipping dies, and a stripe roller.

I have used a MB roller for most of my carreer, used and abused, more like it. I have never bent or broken one. For me it was an easy choice. Their customer service is second to none as well.

Do a search for bead roller mod threads, you can get a decent roller cheaper if you are willing to beef up a cheaper one.
