New guy here. I am into Ford Yblocks these days, black 57 Bird currently. Anyway, when I was a kid maybe 12-13 years old, I lived in Campbell, California. Near my home was a guy who built serious custom cars in and around his small home/garage. Very funky setup. This would be around 1957-59. The cars he built were full customs obviously for the show circuit. One car I remember was a 57 or 58 Plymouth Fury, chopped top, quad headlights, swivel seats, TV, lowered, radical body work, angel hair dashboard, pearl white paint with peach/gold scallops as best I can remember. This was a home on a neighborhood street and he always had 4 or 5 cars in some state of build parked in his driveway and on the street. I doubt he was the most popular dude with the other homeowners. I used to ride my bike over there once in awhile and just hang out across the street on the edge of an orchard to see him work. I never ventured across the street, he worked alone as far as I could see. Didn't seem interested in anyone bothering him. I had been reading all the custom/rod magazines and new the work he was doing was far more than a hobbyist. The house was on or near Clarita Ave. It is now technically in San Jose but is on the Cambell/San Jose border. The neighborhood back then was surrounded by fruit orchards; prunes, cherry trees, and strawberry fields. It has all been built over since the late 60's. I have looked around the Web off and on trying determine who this builder was. The only one I can come up with is possibly Joe Wilhelm. I figured this forum could be a place that might have some history or some old Bay Area rodders who remember him. Thanks, Mark
Your refering to man my mind is drawing a blank, he built the red 36 Elmatador I wann say Bill cushen berry, he passed away, my buddy grew up right across the street from him him. I didn't know who he was until we bumped into each in Paso around 98 99 passed away about a year after. There is also Sky Clous who is still building full customs to this day, he was doing it in the late 40's and still going strong, when winter comes he heads to Florida hops on his yaut and sails to cuba or something like that. I wanna say your right it was Joe W,
