Are there any that do chop tops that anyone knows of? I've found a few that do muscle cars and race cars but customs are a bit different
Might be a good idea to mention the car that you are looking to chop. '30's era cars are something that a talented craftsman might be willing to tackle, but could shy away from a later model car. It's more involved than it might appear and don't forget all of the garnish moldings will need to be cut to match the new profile. Then there is the matter of all glass needed after the chop. When you see a project for sale that has already been chopped, but no glass has been installed, there's usually a reason. Not trying to be a Negative Nellie here, but just make sure whoever you find knows what they are doing. If it's your Shoebox Ford in your profile picture, yes they've been done hundreds of times, so a competent body man should be able to do the task. Keep asking around at events that you might attend. I'm guessing you may find a good retired bodyman or a small shop. Obviously a BIG shop will likely be much more expensive and may want to build the whole car for you at LARGE $$$$. Good luck....Don.
so I ended up buying my '51 Bel Air back. What I want to do is replace the three-piece rear glass with a coupe roof rear section, so not exactly a chop but more of a graft. I'm sure everyone's familiar with '51 hard tops and coupes but if not, the coupe has a shorter roof line than the hardtop which is what I'm looking for
I sent them an email last night so I'm just waiting to hear back from them at this point. Hopefully they can give me a "semi quote" over the phone cause they're pretty far away from me
How big is Maryland? A few days drive from end to end? If you want quality, I doubt the local cave and pave body shop would be able to do the work.
...Not sure where you are in the state, but you might want to put your "general" area in this post and on your profile page so other locals might see it and know where you might get the work done. There's also a sub forum on here for Maryland members that you might want to check out.
I didn't know either of those things was a possibility on here but I'll definitely get it taken care of. I'm just outside of Frederick
@ClutchDumpinDan at Old Dominion Speed & Custom in Fredricksburg, VA did a beautiful job chopping a shoebox Ford.
Near Winchester Virginia down 81 , About 1 hour from Frederick Md Place in White Post , custom , coach & restoration shop, Between Front Royal and Winchester Can not remember Name , been around for many years Posie in Pa maybe 1-1/2 -2 hrs
I'll check them out for sure. The problem is getting the car down and dropping it off and then finding a way home.
Do not know for sure now , over the years they built a few class show vehicles and seemed to remember their name being attached to other builds besides just spring, @ one time they had a T shirt referring to chopping Top's, a character with a big chainsaw
There might be a waiting line and it might be $$$$$ but for this area, nobody better than Cody Walls http://www.traditionalmetalcraft.com/. His latest work…chopped, sectioned, channeled and more than I can think of
Might call Bucky`s in Martinsburg, they may be willing to take something like that on, maybe not? worth the call.
