Hot Rods Custom grill insert

I need to make a custom grill insert for my '36 chevy truck grill shell.
What have you done to make one for your hot rod? i.e., aluminum pipe? stainless pipe? Sheet of Stainless with holes punched in it?

Just looking for cheap easy ideas to build one that will look decent.
