Ok let's hear the good the bad and the ugly? I need a set of custom forged pistons for a blown 330 Desoto hemi..... Should I go with Venolia, Ross or Arias? I hear Arias are real S L O W on the service side of things. Whos used these guys and who should I use and why? Thanx in advance, Rat
I've used Ross before and NEVER had a problem. In fact I'm getting a set of 10:1's for my 291 DeSoto made right now.
I mostly use Arias and have not found them to be slow. I will be using them for my new Dodge. That said I bought Ross pistons for my 907 G/GR motor and they were great. (Record). Later got some Venolias for it and nothing wrong with them. Looks like it's up to which decal you like best.
Ross has good customer service and pretty quick. Arias is one of the best companies quality wise out there and I swear by them "but" I go to them when I know I don't have to have it in a hurry. I have had good luck with JE for several applications. I have also heard whoever bought the rights to "Jahns" are(maybe already) going to make forged models for their original catalog or applications.
Thanx for the feedback guys. I emailed Arias 2 weeks ago but have'nt had a reply. My first choice was to go with Arias but cant do that if they don't want my biz hehe. Any other experiences would be good to know about hanx... Rat
Ross had my order done and shipped in less the 2 weeks. Perfect service and the pistons were great. We mic'ed and weighed them all and they were nearly perfect. They were for a late 331 motor
Mine are custom Ross. JE Pistons are also very good and comparable in price. Arias seemed a little overpriced for out of the ordinary custom pistons. Was quoted $200 more for them actually. Only had one person tell me bad things about Ross; a person I didn't expect to tell me. A very reputable person, of who's name will remain anonymous because it doesn't matter. My only complaint about Ross was they didn't really like the idea that I didn't buy rings from them. I saved a ton of money buying rings elsewhere, and I think it through them for a little bit of a loop. My order was delayed.
I;ve bought from Ross and Venolia. Venolia was about $100.00 cheaper. They also have a lot of experience with Desoto pistons. Somewhere I have an old Venolia catalog which actually features Desoto slugs. All the suppliers of pistons will ask for the deck height of the engine. For the tall block Desotos is 10.375". Standard rings will work for just about anything but racing. If you bore the moter .030" you can use a set of standard rings for a 265 Chevy. If you go .060" over just get the same rings .030" oversize. A lot cheaper than buying from a speed house. Also, the Desotos have a weird pin size. My pistons use the very cheap SBC pins. I had the small ends of the rods rebushed for the Chevy size and was still money ahead. Check and see. Bill
I use Venolia in my 92 stroker and Ross in my RedRam Great satisfaction with both companys and no complaints.
