The concept is the plates are fake regardless of whether the numbers match or it looks like the real thing. Do us all a favor. When you get nailed don't start a thread about the DMV screwing you.
There is a guy that is at many Cali swap meets/shows, was at Turlock and Sacto, that makes plastic stamped fake plates that are pretty realistic looking. All non State issued plates are considered only novelty plates. Messing with plates, others messing with ***les/registrations, only bring more negative attention to the modified car world.
CA YOM plates have a special plates fee of $10 a year, and a one-time $35 fee for the initial registration. Reproduction plates would look out of place on most cars. A '56 plate with the "#**X###" configuration would be more obvious. You can find deals on YOM plates. We're gonna gitchu if you ruin it for the rest of us! Thanks, Kurt
trust me i wont be starting a thread about the DMV screwing me , im not saying i wont get caught (its always possable although i really dont think it will be a problem) in fact this whole thread reminds me of why i rarely ever start threads , you ask a simple question about where to get a product and you always get a bunch of peoples opinions on something totally irrelevant to the orig. question . i guess i shoulda just said "does anybody know a website i can get custom made ca plates made at so i can hang it on my garage wall?" , then i would have avoided reading all of this outher ******** . but since the cans already been opened......i WILL be running a FAKE plate on my truck ......dont worry about it , its not your truck or your problem if i get caught FINK i forgot to say thanks to the people who responded to the ACTUAL question
OK, here's what you MUST know before you try and be slick and have "fake/repro" plates made...It is a FELONY! I RARELY, and I do mean RARELY respond to posts of this nature. . .simply because I know what I am about to say will probably fall on deaf ears or inflame fires already there. . . But I find it ironic that you admit PUBLICALLY to PLANNING to break the law, without any regard for the consequences your actions may have on the community AT LARGE, and then have the audacity to get upset when people attempt to point it out to you. In fact, your actions may become MY problem. . .if, as others have tried to point out, people doing this cause problems/termination for the YOM program in general. It is too easy to ***ume that your actions will not have a ripple effect on others in the community, when in fact they do. It is one thing to have complete and utter ignorance of the law, and while that may not excuse your actions, it can be understood. To willfully and publically flaunt your disregard for it, in my humble, and unasked for, opinion, is quite another. FWIW. . .my .02. . .
MissPrint........thanks for your opinion , everyones en***led to express one as this is a public forum and belive it or not point well taken , seriously. so to everyone out in HAMBland I WILL NOT BE PUTTIN THIS PLATE ON MY TRUCK! its going to hang on the wall in my garage....nod-nod , wink-wink . everybody happy now? ok so now im going out to the garage to work on my 55 without fear of the postmaster kicking in my door for mail fraud , the dmv sending the cops over with guns drawn to arrest this dangerous felon or a group of angry HAMBers coming over to burn me at the stake for destroying there precious YOM program ...........all because i asked for the name of a website , i guess next time i just google it ........ FINK
Buy the plates and run them. They look perfect. Way better than alot of "restored" plates I have seen throughout the years with bad paint jobs. Besides, I am sure no cop is going to put a magnet to your plate. Good luck, I am sure you won't need it though.
"does this make sense ... get personal plates that match the plates you want to use >now everything looks right&is on paper>use your old plates now with some piece of mind ?" The 1929 Colorado Truck plate is a correct YOM plate for the '29 CCPU. The other plate is a personalized plate to match a 1927 CO plate painted to match the car. Both plates are legal as I've received parking tickets! I did have a CHP officer admire the '27 plates and said that he could care less. However, it was a good excuse to pull me over just because.
lol , i'll be there..........i might have to wear a wig and dark gl***es though......too bad my truck isnt back togather yet ! and i wont have my plate......er....a .....i mean "wall decor" yet
Here in Ohio they probably have similar laws but I have seen people using those plastic plates made at the flea markets as YOM plates and never heard any stories about getting caught,I know Ohio is like another world compared to California since they are looking for any dollar they can squeeze out of you and then more but if the plate looks identical to the real one how and why would they even check. You would think they would have more important things to look for then reproduction YOM plates,if it was for the actual regular plates I could see it but we are talking about plates that have been out of production for many years and used on vehicles that are not used for daily drivers but the state governments (includes federal) have no common sense on most things.
At least he looked it up and understands the penalty for being a knucklehead. You get the ticket and watch your car get towed off to an impound somewhere, don't come cryin' on the HAMB about how the "man" jacked you around. Be a kid about it, that's OK.
thats already been covered.........refer to post # 35 , and for your info if i did busted i wouldnt be complaining about "the man" , it would be "the pigs" , lol . oh and im sure glad to know its ok with you to be a kid ! you know "kids will be kids" FINK
The law could also be interpreted that original plates cannot be restored or repainted back to original. I took my totally restored black CA plates to the DMV to have my 67 Impala SS registered after being out of the CA DMV system for 20+ years. The DMV clerk said "nice plates, they're in really good shape" and took a photocopy of them sent the whole ball-o'-wax up to Sacramento Special Plate Processing. The plates were ***igned to the car 3 months later and no one batted an eye over the fact the were restored/repainted. Also, on my other 67 Impala SS, it has newer personallized plates. I'm having a guy repaint one of them them black/yellow. He has never heard of anyone being popped for repainting a new lipstick plate black/yellow. The law 4463 is open to interpretation. What does "alters" mean? I did not change the number. It still says "California". I'm not trying to p*** it off as anything else but a California license plate. It is still a real CA plate. No counterfitting. Nothing is forged. The plate matches the registration. No falsifying. And there is no "intent to defraud" anybody. YOM is not in jepordy because the state needs money and YOM is a (small) revenue generator. BTW, in CA, you cannot get a personnalized license plate in the "NNN LLL" or "LLL NNN" configuration, as some have suggested.
You'll be fine. As long as all the numbers are correct no ones going to give a ****. They will never even know. when they run your plates it does not state what color they should be, and even if it did, theres not really anything in the books about painting your plates from what I understand, which means there would be no reason for su****ion. or magnet test or anything like that. Did it have plates when you got it? you know, the aluminum ones Paranoia abounds...
whoever stated stop painting newer plates i can't agree more.. i would ***ume that the highway patrol is trained in these things (maybe)... this reminds me of a jack *** that runs around town in a newer audi wagon that has a personalized plate reading AFX painted black and gold..
What bfink55 intends to do has nothing to do with YOM plates or the YOM program. He wants to have his current, 7-digit numbers/letters combination on a (reproduction) vintage plate. Which looks half-***, IMHO, 'cause those combinations did not exist, back then.
They did actually... That's why a lot of 1951 CA plates aren't "clear" they have the same sequence as currently issued plates for pickups/commercial vehicles, or: #X##### 1A23456 for instance...
IMHO, I do think new plates painted black/yellow look cheesey because of too many letters, EXCEPT personalized plates.
Dont do it, if thats what you were going to do. They are correct, the number/letter combos are different. I thought you had one old plate, and just needed a second to qualify for YOM program...
if you know license plate sequences, they all look cheesy.. why would you paint a personalized plate black and gold when they were never issued
Because I want personalized plates AND I want black plates. And I don't like the white plates. I do have a set of DMV clear black plates for YOM in case I ever decide to change.
well if you have yom 63 to 69 p***enger car plates and a car that meets those years (you prob already know this) july 1st you will be able to use those plates.. painting a set of plates a totally diff color is defacing government property.. yes they will be yours because they are personalized, but in the end its really not a good idea...
wow- if you want to paint em paint em! who cares its your car your plates. i agree the old plates look better, but if you do have yom plates clear and ready, then theres only one form to sign & BAM youre done. Theres also a couple ways to get your new numbers on old "novelty" plates....
