I recieved my newly black/chrome yellow painted personalized license plate, and it looks awesome!!! Regarding to legality, I think the key phrase in the law is "intent to defraud". I have a cop friend who says he knows that personalized plates started with the blue/yellow plates. I asked him to brutally honest and that would determine if I actually run the plate. He said that as long as the plate matches the VIN and registration, HE would not have a problem with it, because there is no intent to defraud anybody, just an intent to be historically accurate. He also thinks it would be a "chicken-****" ticket. And he is not a car guy. I'm runnin' the plate.
The is no such thing as a "DMV clear" single plate. You need a matched pair of real plates. I cringe when I see single plates listed as DMV clear.
