Anybody can direct me to companies who fabricate transverse Model A rear springs to your own specs ? Coupe currently has a Speedway Motors high arch model Model A spring, see details here... http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/2148,325_High-Arch-Rear-Spring.html?itemNo=rear spring Model A frame has 8" rear kick-up.Car bottoms out, need to gain more suspension travel.Don't want to cut anything on frame or body. Also, would it be okay to put some kind of block between top of rear spring and crossmember which also will result in more suspension travel.Anybody did this before ? Need your help BAD !
You can put a spacer in there. There are alot of cars running around with spacers to get the proper ride height. Jimmy White
Hey Jimmy, thanks for the quick reply ! No safety issues with spacer blocks ? That definitely would be the easiest and fastest way to fix the problem.
No problem! You just dont want to go to overboard!! Try to use the bare minimum that you can get buy with. Is your spring in a crossmember or is it on a perch? If it is in a crossmember you should try to make the top of the spacer match the radius of the top of the crossmember. I had to make a spacer for the Kandy Tangerine RPU that we built, It ended up having way to much spring rate, so to get it to ride properly I removed some springs and added a spacer to get the right ride height. It ended up riding better and sitting exactly how I wanted it to. Good Luck Jimmy White P.s. You can also find some spare leaves and cut them down, 6-8 inches and put them on top of the pack as your spacer.
Spacer won't give more travel, just give you more clearance, I have the same spring, yet to use it though, had it shortened two inches on each end, gonna' add I think 4 more leafs from an old original.
If you use a piece of square tubing ,put a spacer/filler inside so it does not try to colapse. And a lug on top to fit the center bolt hole in the perch/cross member.
Jimmy, thanks again.Really appreciate your help.Coupe has a Model A crossmember, also thought spacer should match crossmember radius and also thought about using some old leaves.Problems is we don't have any...but should be no problem to make the correct spacer. Thanks again ! Thanks racemad55.Yes,that's what I meant...more suspension clearance.Did you notice the info on the Speedway Motors spring says 6" to 8" raise. What does that actually mean ? Just curious. Thanks for your advice John.We will do that. Sargführer, ich denke das Problem ist gelöst ! Stell' das Bier kalt.Bis morgen !
Support your local blacksmith... That thing was already done last Tuesday and works perfect.Cut from a 2" steel plate,1" more clearance. Thanks again for everybody's input !
Thats what I am talking about right there!! Nice work man. No prob on the help, Glad I can! Jimmy White
I've got 3 spacers made from 3/8" spring steel made to go under the spring pack under the rear of my A spring. Bad thing was, since these are curved, the spring shop charged me as if they were springs rather than spacers. I had spacers made to go over the front spring on my RPU and they were 6" long and 3/8" thick - cost me $3 each. These 3 spacers I had made today ran me almost $60!
The first spacer we made (see above) was still not high enough. It worked good for 50 miles or so.Already made a second one, this time 1 3/4" but the high arch Model A rear spring from Speedway Motors seems to settle more and more now where it is under load.Coupe was almost rigid before without spacer. Need a custom-made rear spring BAD ! Anybody can recommend a good spring shop ?
Gotta bring this back to top for the night crew. Also, anyone can tell me the dimesnsions of a stock Model A rear spring...eye to eye length and inner leaf arch height ? Thanks !
