    Hi... new here...

    I saw a few threads on this topic, but couldn't seem to find anyone who has actually done this -

    Would it work to take some custom steel strips, cutouts, or letters and glue them to a valve cover with JB weld, then give it a nice paint job? I'm thinking it could make for a nice custom valve cover with raised detail. Would JB weld hold up?

    Thoughts?

  2. Yea that works, usually looks pretty hokey but it works.

    Better idea is pin stripes or hand painted letters.

    I've never seen it done but I suppose it's as straight forward as it sounds.

    Last set of something similar I saw they had made a female die for the lettering and hand stamped the words into a piece of sheet metal before cutting the old top out of the valve cover and welding in the new one.

    I'd suspect between heat and vibration the jb weld would fail but I've never had that great of luck with it in the first place

    I would weld the metal rather than glue. But I agree that some nice hand painted lettering or a real stamped insert would look better.

    I have thought of making fake cast aluminum valve covers by covering a steel one with bondo or fibregl***, sticking aluminum strips or some kind of emblem in the top, sanding or sculpting to taste then paint the valve cover with aluminum paint or maybe flat black, and polish the strips or emblem. Never got around to trying it. No reason you can't sculpture any shape or design you want in bondo or fibregl*** and it should last if it is painted and you don't knock it around.

    Anything is possible. On my 500ci Caddy I tool some early 50's Caddy valve covers, cut the tops off and then welded them onto my existing stamped steel covers. After a little bit of paint they look pretty good;
