What we have here is a failure to communicate.............

A major part of the problem comes from trying to make specific definitions to categorize vehicles and put them perfectly into little subsets which have virtually no absolute definition. Neat little "boxes' .....so to speak. Basically we all get the idea that a Hot Rod is supposedly modified to increase its performance....and a Custom is modified to alter it's looks hopefully improving those looks in the process.
Both groups have many unsuccessful results as well as many very successful results.

But then we try to create subsets......and that's where the problem begins to evolve. Just because a car/truck is a custom does not mean it can't also be a hot rod..........and vice versa.

Just because it doesn't suit our particular taste does not mean it is or is not............whatever.

Maybe we should all just quit trying to put labels on everything...........and enjoy the ones we like and let others enjoy the ones they like.......what someone wants to call it don't mean anything.

Completely different ideas, but I often find myself with similar thoughts regarding some customs and some rat rods: Complete and sincere admiration for the skills needed to complete the project versus the apparently total lack of any aesthetic or design sense. Not my cars so I can only wonder. But if you show it or post it, you are open to comment.

  3. Change for the sake of change usually yields a pile of shit. I love real customs, but some abortions should stay in the garage. 0af3_12.jpg 1f17a6bb9e.jpg 8fb7_12.jpg 1961-chevrolet-impala (1).jpg 240588097_3602691896623358_7100773759669085433_n.jpg

  6. How do you suppose a "hot rods gone wrong" thread would go over? The internet is full of pictures of these kinds of motorised "more extreme than the next guy" rat rod abortions. But it's somehow ok to bash on Customs? Do we really want to end up going down that road?

Yeah, good for Bad Chad. He's in a good position and making money doing what he likes. My problem is it sends the wrong message to people. "Just do what you feel like and it's all good - I don't follow no rule book". It'd be nice to have someone on youtube building cars who stresses the importance of sitting down and actually thinking about if the final product is going to look good or not. Talk about design and proportion and why that shit matters and not just welding stuff together at random, because it generates clicks. Trouble is, most garage dwellers don't understand any of that stuff, or care about it.

  7. I thought exactly the same thing! There's some interesting stuff going on there, albeit probably accidentally. How you'd make a successful car design based on that aesthetic is another question.

  11. Those 'shorties' would all benefit from moving the rear wheels back about 6". There was a guy who showed up locally years ago with a shortened '55 Chevy wagon but done with a few twists. First, he either lengthened the doors or used 2-dr doors but used a 4-dr wagon rear half. Second, he moved the rear wheels back to about the mid-point of the quarters and used '55 Nomad wheel openings (you could buy them in those days). It had very good proportions, kind of an early Bronco/Blazer look. I only saw it twice, I heard that he wrecked it doing wheelies...

My thoughts exactly. Move the wheels so the distance between the front of the tire to the door is the same as the distance from the rear of the tire to the bumper. Would require the frame be cut and sectioned to make everything work.

  18. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…
Not worth some folks getting their panties in a bunch just because they don’t appreciate every modification done to a car… I’m sure there are car guys that don’t like what I’m doing to my car, (I will change it if they think I should, NOT…) FACFA6EC-28D6-4802-9770-9E7607EB6FA2.jpeg

Maybe not all that bad, at least he used a 4dr for the starting point by looking at the roof and rear side panels. But I have seen better….. All I’m asking is why use late model Camaro or TA body parts on a 50’s custom

Here's a '39 Ford truck custom. I love these trucks but in my opinion this just doesn't work.
