With the cost of re-chroming in these parts I am looking over my options on what to do about bumpers on my 52 fleetline. I am thinking of building some custom bumper from different cars and for now just paint them till I can get the coin to have them chromed. I am on two minds with this idea cause when I think of painted bumpers I think of 80`s customs with the bumpers paint pastel colors. I thinking maybe a silver. I need to see some customs that look good with painted bumpers.I have two samples. first one I don`t like but the second one has some possibilities. What is your take on this??
Hey I am in the same boat. If I was doing it over again I would leave the shitty crome and welds showing. Looks better than painted bumpers anyday
Ya that is my take too but it will be very costly from where I am. One guy here just had bumpers done for a 55 Pontiac and they cost the guy $4500 for chroming. Shipping is a bitch here. The nearest chroming house that I would trust to do the work is about 2500 mile away!
Save your pennies and chrome them. Nothing ruins a custom more than painting over parts that were originally chrome plated.
That is the plan to save and have it done but for now I want to try and get it on the road for next summer. That is a lot to save up by then. Seems most people take is much the same as mine. Guess there is no such thing is a cool custom with painted bumpers.
damn that is a bunch i thought 400 to 500 was getting out of hand .my buddy just had his 64 galaxy bumpers done 300 apiece. man i feel for u guys
Price will depend on how much work needs to be done by the chrome company..if there all straight and smooth I cant imagine they would be that much. Are there any companys that chrome close by to avoid shipping costs? If you prep them real nice, even a less expensive chrome job would look good!
Save your cash and do a road trip down in the states somewhere (HAMB members will make good suggestions) where you can have the bumpers done for a reasonable price. The guy who bought my 51 Merc painted the bumpers and it really hurts the looks of the car that he spend blood sweat and tears on to make pretty close to right except for the painted bumpers and wheel and tire choice.
I'm working on a 57 Buick right now and we dont talk about the ''C'' word around here One thing I will never do again is paint bumpers LOOKS LIKE SHIT!! trush me I know
I second that ... As long as my chrome has no holes in it, it's good enough to use until I can afford to recondition it.
Trust me Here in Newfoundland Chroming is a big problem. There are no shops on the Island and there is one closer to us but too many locals have had problems with them so we send all our stuff to Toronto. The bumpers that were 4500 were good cores with mild rust. You will get a few small peices done for say 500 bucks. Like I said It is costly from here.
Maybe you could smooth them out really good and wrap them in that HVAC tape. Might be a little cheezy and would definitely be temporary but better than paint.
I just went over to carnut.com and looked at '49-'52 Chevrolets. Some had painted bumpers that didn't look so good, others looked great. I'd suggest checking it out for yourself. www.carnut.com They have an index in upper right side of page. click it and you'll find your way. Arkie
There is a guy near Montreal that does nice work for decent prices specializes in custom bikes if I recall...alot of my old friends in Ottawa were using him for car stuff...I think he had the booth set up at the nats in Moncton last year...
my buddy just bought a 54 Olds w/ painted bumpers and it kills the whole car..save your money and chrome em'..
I'm not sure where you are but can u drive to alaska to get them chromed? Anything must be cheaper than what you're talking.
It's a Chevy; you can buy new ones and only have to ship once. I really don't know what new ones cost, but I rechrome 3 piece 52 Chevy bumpers for about $350 front or rear. $700 for both. These are some of the cheapest bumpers you can get. Most others are bigger. heavier, and more detailed.
I have a painted 55 Pontiac front bumper on my 53 Ford because I couldn't and can't afford to have it chromed. It's been on there for 25 years and like it or not I.m stuck with it. I removed the painted rear 55 Pontiac bumper and put the chrome 53 bumper back on. I like the chrome much better. But, its a matter of money!
I looked at that idea of buying repos. I was wanting something a bit different with the bumpers.I think with the headlight treatment i am going with,56 Olds, that the headlight pots would look too big with small bumpers.
Alaska!!! Man you on the wrong side for me.Head east hit water and then find a Island hit that then drive to the the other side of that Island and you`ll find me. Man!! England is closer to me then Alaska!!
Yes he did.Tried to talk to him but was given a run around. seems these guys are french They must not understand Newfienese !! You had some trouble understanding us for god sakes.lol
Painted bumpers that are supposed to be chrome look like shit. If you are trying to do somthing at least remotely "traditional", on a budget, roll the pans where the bumpers used to be and make, or have made, some nerf bars out of stainless so you don't have to chrome them.
