I have a’56 Buick Special that sits crooked. The drivers side sits exactly 1” lower than the p***enger side, in front & back. This is after putting all new stock height springs in.

Will cutting the coils only on the p***enger side (to even her up) cause poor ride characteristics?

Would putting spring spacers in on the drivers side (to even her up) be better?

Is there something else in the suspension that could cause this?

I’m stumped! Thanks in advance for any help!

How long has it been since you put the new springs in? They need time to settle. Drive it around for a week or two, then see how level it is. Then you can decide on surgery or not...

That’s a good point, they are fresh springs, with almost no miles on them.

But “the rest of the story” is that it was about 1 & 1/2” out of level before putting in the new springs. That’s why I replaced the springs to begin with.

The springs may not be the problem. Swap them over (left to right, right to left) and see if it makes any difference to the side the car leans. It might be a bent ch***is or bent suspension components.
I would not recommend cutting the coil on only one side. The cut spring will be stiffer, and may cause handling issues.

If the leaning has only happened after fitting the new springs, check the installation. Make sure they are seated properly, and let them settle.

Thanks for your thoughts, that’s why I’m asking. I’m just having trouble diagnosing what could cause the “lean” both front and rear. Body mounts could be another suspect I suppose?

Gas tank and battery are both over towards the driver's side???
Fill the tank, get someone to sit in the driver's seat, and have a look.
Sometimes the manufacturers built in some compensation from the factory.......

The first thing you think about when someone says saggy **** is it needs a new lift, aka springs. But saggy dried cracked and crushed body mounts are usually the problem... Those however are a lot more work to replace.

Seems like Frieburger had an issue like this on Roadkill Garage…springs were same height but had different spring tension?
