Cutting up a flathead 4spd to make a T5 adapter?

I had a set of the ebay plans detailing the use of the 46 and up truck 4 speed to make a T5 adapter but never had a close look before loaning them out... and haven't seen them since.

I know about the detachable hogshead and I know about the plate Dwight Bond makes to finish the adaptation. But I thought I saw a section explaining a method of using the case itself as the rest of the adapter. Basically cutting the front end off, then flycutting and drilling a few missing locating holes.

Maybe I misunderstood the instructions, but like I said I didn't do much reading, just a quick glance through to look at the pictures and skim the copy.

If you need some "Late model Ford Tranny" parts to cut up, I have a late 60's mustang tranny with an aluminum bell housing that you can have. I keep tripping over it behind the garage.

Anything ever come of this, Kevin?

I've never done this, nor know of anyone who's done it, but I've seen sections of trannys cut off like that with no obvious use but to turn into an adapter at some future point...just never seen a finished product.

  11. I have those plans, I will find them and scan for you if you wish. It was basically taking the transmission and cutting it apart at described dimension and then drilling holes as required.

I think the key here has to do with being able to do the machine work yourself or farm it out. Access to the equipment to do the job and the skills to do it should mean it is quite inexpensive and the old trans does something more than contribute to the next scrap run load. Having someone else do the work an paying them may cost more than buying one of the adapters.
I'm interested though as I have the hogshead on the back of my bellhousing and have a buddy with a world class machine shop.
