heated coils, a good idea or no? Any anticipated problems wiyh doing this? This would be for my buddies 63 Galaxey if that has any significance. Thanx
If they were already heated, the spring rate and integrity are probably already compromised. Many time's i've heard heating coils isn't a good idea. If they were, i'd suggest getting a new set and start from scratch..only my suggestion though. On cutting them, All the coils i've done, i just cut them with a cut-off wheel. They cut fast and don't build up a lot of heat in the spring. Hope this helps a little. Rat...
Yeah, my buddy already heated them, but was wondering if cutting them too would seriously jack anything up...I think he's planning on getting new dropped springs anyway. Thanx
If they're already heated and collapsed, he's got nothin to lose by cutting the collapsed part off. Unfortunately, that will prolly leave his spring too short to be of any use to him so he has nothing to gain from it either. He needs new springs to cut up.
Springs spring because they are tempered. When you heat them you ruin that temper and the load/rebound rate. They will most likely break somewhere near the heated portion, sooner or later. Best thing would be for him to order some new ones and cutoff a coil or two using the cutoff wheel method mentioned above. RASHY
I had a 63 Galaxie and got new coils , then cut out 2 turns . It sat really low , but still had a good amount of travel ( IMO ) with 3 inch blocks in the back and a few leafs removed , that thing sat on the deck and would drag the frame on good sized speedbumps .
