Hi everyone, I have been looking for a nostalgic looking tire for a 62 impala im building,
i came across the Radir wheels website and found these new 7" slicks,

Has anyone seen these? they are sooo cool!, they have Checkered flags in the tread.

I called the number on the webpage and they gave me some details,
    d.o.t. approved
    7" foot print 7 1/2"-8" section width
2" whitewall, 1 piece made, 4 ply sidewalls.

sounds pretty good so far, but they said about 2-3 weeks until they get any in stock, (we all know how that goes,..)

I was going to use the slicks speedway sells but they said that they cant get them anymore, when i talked to the people at Radir wheels they said that those speedway recaps are used radial truck tires that are recapped, and some of them have raised white letters like "bfgoodrich trail t/a" YUCK! they also said that you cant run radials on the rear of a car and bias ply tires in the front, is this true?

    thanks for your help!

    I think they're cool, but too small!

  3. So...these are Bias Ply?
    Brand new right?

What's the point of the flag tread?

  4. Speedway sold the HURSTS. Owned by HAMBer suedesled. They are good tires, lots of us here run them. The checkered flags are a gay gimmick.

You can do anything you want, but it makes for a very ill handling car...

don't mix radials and bias ply tires on a vehicle; use all of one or the other. i know folks who have mixed them and claimed that the vehicle drove ok, but the conventional wisdom is that it can get squirrely.

I like the checkered flag "GimmicK." Tman is an authority on Gay though....

The speedway hurst slicks were decent, but they did have Truck lettering on them.... I saw acouple pairs theat weren't too bad, and a couple that looked terrible......

You are better off buying them straight form Northwest speed, because they use better looking casings..... and they have alot more options....... the speedway ones were the "cheap models", because they used whatever casings they could find.....

At least thats the way I understood it anyway.

I've had Hurst slicks on my roadster with thousands of miles.... they work great. I have Bias tires on the front.

It is fine to run radials in the back and bias in the front. the radials will "follow" the bias........... if you run radials on the front and bias in the back the bias will "fight" the radials and it is dangerous..........

    I'll second that.
I'm running the Hurst slick on the roadster with bias on the front.
Drives fine on a light short wheel base car, no problem at all.
I wouldn't do it on a full size boat.

When I bought the 51 Chebby the guy had the orignal bias tires on the front and used radials on the back. That was a wild ride home!

wait a minute - you mean the other way around right?

I though bob just said "you run radials on the front and bias in the back the bias will "fight" the radials and it is dangerous..........

I just want to make sure - I didin't know this was an issue! ya gotta learn sumthin everyday right?

    Damn...
I was thinking the same thing as Tman? :p

Those flags on the tread are about as stoopid as a "Foxy Lady" shirt on the old wino lady at the low-rent end of the trailer park...

I think the Checkered flag tread is cool as hell, I guess some people just dont get it and end up running Radial T/A's. ha!

Dont care for the flag treatment. I want straight grooves.. The size is just right for my sedan,,

Suedesled, you any closer to getting those skinny cheater slicks with widewhites.. its been a few months since I last asked..

Here's the straight skinny from the horses mouth. Bias ply slicks are dangerous on the street and at high speed period. The sideall doesn't have enough structure to control the weight of the slick.

Bias on the front and radials is cool; the other way around will be a handful at best.

We stopped selling to speedway because they where cutting the throats of our dealers and only buying the blems and cast-offs.

The slicks you buy from us are premium casings and have no lettering on the outside.

We are still down due to having to upgrade trnasformers for power but when we come back in May it will be with a vengance and whitewalls!

Hey I do remember a company from New Jersey......Marsh???? That had the crossed flags in the 'pie crust' area and I think Redlines......I cant see the dark pic, but it might be the same.

I thought those were pretty cool, I don't remember them having the cheater slick.......

Beats the piss out of looking at another set of radials.........Wait a minute I have radials too...

The checked flag tread is nothing new. Its been around since the
    early sixties.
I can also recall pie crust slicks with diamonds, spades, hearts, and
clubs (your choice) in white in place of the whitewall.

Hey Sued, can you give us some info on any new sizes (16'' I hope) and
    whitewall widths?
    tia.

Hi Atch....... Yea, Rusty bought those slicks from Speedway.
That Deuce was a hand-full on the highway!

I'm one that is happy to here Sued that your're not dealing with
    those cut-throat importers anymore.

Marsh's Racing Tires is in Siloam Springs, AR...still in biz but no they longer do recaps...just racing wheels, I believe. I used to be one of their dealers along with selling Hurst, Hoosier and McCreary racing tires.

Lyle Marsh used the "checkered flag" tread design for years..."Checkered Flag" was one of his trade names on his drags slicks...nothing "Gay" about it...just another 60's marketing idea. The pic from the Gartlis Museum is of Marsh drag slicks.

The 'New Jersey" company you MAY be thinking of might have been M&H...Marv Rifchin "invented" the racing slick used by EVERYONE in the 60's. He p***ed away several years ago and, I believe, the company was sold.

I must respectfully disagree with Suedesled regarding the safety of bias-ply slicks at high speeds. Top Fuel cars ran them at speeds over 250 mph...sounds pretty safe to me. I ran ****red Street Slicks ( local Milwaukee biz) on my '57 Olds in the 60's with no ill effects. They were simply regular bias-ply casing with a slick tread..same as every tire made until the 70's radial revolution. And NASCAR Cup cars ran bias-ply slicks well into the 1990's with Bill Elliot setting a record at Talladega with his T-Bird at some 225 MPH plus with 'em...And most racing tires produced today are still on bias-ply casings...

Thanks Krooser I was thinking of Marsh - Not sure why I thought they were from Jersey...

Being a Yankee I do know M&H originally from Watertown M*** (then maybe Gardner). I used to buy parts from a clubhouse (CARBs - Orange) near there.

I think Marsh made some cool 14 inch slicks with a tall profile and redline. I chased a set for a red 36 5window I had about 12 years ago. I never did get them and have not seen another pair. They were different than the slicks at the top of the page. I would still buy a set if I could find them....

IMO those are real dumb. Why is it that going where things never had gone before is cool ? I know , cause we all want to be unique and different to obtain more attention. Ok, Not to hurt someones feelings..........Maybe they can add little lights to the sidewalls that will illuminate by flashing when the tires are spun during a burnout.....You know , like little kidz shoes these days........More poser **** !

Reseda....Never saw Marsh redlines..gotta be pretty rare....

LB....Every era has it's own style...If we all didn't like SOME kinda style, every car would be a flat piece of wood with wooden wheels...Marilyn Monroe would have been making movies dressed in burlap ( or worse, Amish garb)...it's the stylists that made the '32 cool...put the grille in the '40 Ford...put fins on a Cadillac...gave the Auburn 835 it's Boattail...Goodyear has "Bluestrek" tires for the street to ***ociate their tires with the "Bluestreak" racing tires of the day...Firestone 'invented" the Redline to counter that...Now I'm a REAL traditional kinda guy...I love the stuff of an earlier era whether it's clothing, architecture or automobiles.....But without new, and changing, styles our world would be a much less colorful place..IMHO.

Those tires kick ***, I wish they would have make them in the bigger size. But what do I know, I am just a poser.

For those that claim no such thing ever existed, there were 2 pairs of Marsh slicks for sale at GG Indy last year. We bought these for Abomber30 the other set was the same except they were redlines with whitewalls. I should have gotten the redline ones. He wanted 250 for them and they were in good shape. It would have been a shame to run them because once they were used up then they'd be gone. But now that they are repopping them that's a different story!

Note the uber poser checkered flag sidewall, awesome!

There was a set of those at Iola last year. Hard as rocks and the guy wanted $500 for the pair. Looked nice but not practical for over 30 years old.
