Anybody have Experiences from Dad they would like to share? I can remember helping my Dad climb all over up and down the backwoods hills in Virginia looking for 57, 58, 59 Ford 9" rear ends in the old car junkyards. I busted my tail off lugging the jacks up and down hillsides jacking up the cars and then wrenching and cutting out the rear drivetrain. I think we took 15 out of there in 2 1/2 days. Got that all done and loaded and you know who did most of the work!? WTF. He looks at me and says "NOT BAD for a DICKHEAD!" You talk about being Dumbfounded I was left absolutely speechless. I then heard the phrase several more times an exceptional job was done on various projects.

It took a while, but he got this Pullmax metal bending machine that had a 42" throat and completely restored it rewired the whole thing and it was the perfect time for Retribution like 5 years later and I returned the words of Wisdom about being a "Richard cranium" and you know I never heard those words again.

  2. When I was a lad I tried to help my dad out in the shop as much as I could. The one thing he always said to me was that you stick around until the last dog howls.

My pop's was really old school, never told me good job or that he was proud of me/ Always asked; Why ya doing it that way? I was never sure what to say about it and thought he was being critical. He had a first lieutenant that was always rude to me and just a dick in general. He was telling my pop's that the hot rod thing was going to get me nowhere. Pop's turned to him and said if there were more kids like my son out there we wouldn't have the problems we have in this world. He stated that he always had to ask why I was doing it that way. Not because it was wrong, but it was a way he had not thought about. Not only That, but I had figured it out on my own. That was a very cool day! Basically he had told me good job and he was proud of me and my critical thinking...

My dad always told me “ If you can’t find time to do it right the first time when will you find time to do it again” pretty good words to live by rather it your job, cars or dealing with people.

Well I remember two phrases my dad would use not really car related...
"Useless like tits on a bull!" And when we were on a road trip and I had to take a leak the ever popular, "Do it in you boot and throw it out the window." Still brings a smile to my face.

My dad said, "useless as tits on a boar hog." and my dad instead of calling me dumbass would call me Darryl (after the Newhart show, Larry, Darryl and his other brother Darryl)

  11. Don't try to fix it if it ain't broke! I took the fuel pump off my old flathead and didn't know it's pump shaft was two pieces. One piece disappeared inside the motor. Dad was tool an die maker not a mechanic.

  13. Dad's favorite things to say to me while working in the garage.....
"Don't hold onto a mistake just because you spent a lot of time making it"
"A man built it, a man can fix it"
"It ran once, it will run again"

My Dad wasn't really a car guy but he grew up in the 20's and 30's so he knew his way around a car because he had to keep them going. While me and my brother was growing up in the 50's and 60's he had a lot newer cars so it was mostly just keeping our Buicks serviced. His favorite saying was":Dumber than a box of rocks and Pay attention lump lump" He called his buddies Dude boy from the Little Abner movies back in the 40;s. He was never the TV Dad type dishing out prase and I love yous every day but we knew how he felt. When I was leaving for basic training in 1971, not having any idea where I would end up he told me I had always done what was right and to do the best I could and don't do any thing to piss off the drill instructors. Most of all come back to us in one piece. first time I ever seem him with a tear in his eye. He has been gone 30 years now and I still think of him every day and every time I turn the key in one of my Buicks.

My friends dad would always say to us as we walked out the door on a Saturday night, "Remember boys, a stiff cock has no conscience".

"Fix what you know is wrong."

I usually heard this while trying to adjust a miss out on the carb when I knew the car needed points and plugs but I didn't have the coin to buy 'em.

My dad passed away when I was very young so all I can only really relate to is my apprenticeship.
One day my Boss put his arm around me and said:
"I'v taught you everything I know and your still stupid".

My dad apparently had the same quote but I never heard it from him. My mom told me that's what he used to say. I had a friend who used to tell his son- "Boy, if you're gonna go fishin', wear your boots."

On his death bed he told me "Don't grow old". I think I know what he meant but the alternative isn't pleasant either.

Whenever I pulled off anything remotely clever or successful Dad would say "Where the hell do you think you got your talent from, boy?"
"Mom." Pissed him off pretty good, but he'd always ask, hoping for a different answer.
But there was something he said that rings truer by the year. As he got older he'd say "The older I get, the more I like myself." Yup.

Although my Dad taught me a lot , the remark my high school girl friends Dad told me when I worked for him one summer was " Do not tell you can not do something! Tell me how you figured it out on your own!! All other life's lesson's fell into place. Not always the first time ,but I always figured it out! lol Larry
