Projects Daily driver '58 Chevy Fleetside mild custom

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ElBrujo, Feb 18, 2014.

  1. No, not yet. I have to tack in the cross bars that attach from both c notches and hold the upper bag mounts and shocks. I should tackle that tomorrow if all goes well.

Be sure to stretch everyday, a fucked up back is no joke. I hurt my back and it affects everything. Gotta heal up completely or it'll never get better

  5. Dude, I'm still fucked up. It's been over a week and I'm walking like I dropped the soap in the prison shower. I'm definitely going to start stretching.

Sometimes just walking will loosen your back enough to do other stuff but just getting started is tough

  9. What width 9" did you use?

  10. Thanks guys with the advice on my back. I got a killer massage from my woman, I've been stretching and I feel 100 times better.

    It's a 9" out of a '60 Galaxy. It's 61 3/4" the original is 62" from axle flange to axle flange so it's perfect.

  11. I'm wrong, it's 61 1/4" not 61 3/4".

  12. Thanks man- hope your back feels better soon!

  13. Thanks, Mac. I feel good enough to get back to work. I should have some more progress tonight ;)

  14. Small update, but an update none the less. We got the lower bag brackets and upper bag bracket support bar tacked in. We had to heavily modify them to work, but that's how it goes ;)

That is a bad-ass looking truck. Great choices on color, grille, wheels & tires (& stance)

Are you going to add shocks to the rear?

  19. Yeah, they'll more than likely be on the outside of the rails unless I can figure out another way to mount them. Plus that's just better they be mount farther out than closer towards the middle. I'm going to run a diagonal link so I can't mount the shocks from the lower 4 link mount since that's where the diagonal link is going to mount from. I have some shock brackets that are welded on to the housing and figuring out where they go is my next step.

  20. So we centered the passenger's side lower bag bracket to match the opposite side and started on the top structure. I need to notch the front and back of the structure to clear the third member. That will get done tomorrow, as well as cut the rails so I can fully lower the frame.

  21. I will also be able to mount the shocks off the lower 4 link mounts and keep everyone on the inside of the rails. And the panhard bar will mount on the rear of the 4 link/coil over shock mount and a bracket that will attach to the bottom of the frame. Something similar to this pic.

  22. Or this

    Why wouldn't he use shocks?

  24. Believe it or not bro, I've seen people that skip out on the shocks. I don't know why, but I've seen it.

  25. Notched the support braces front and rear to clear the pumpkin. Spaced the top bag mounts equally and set them at 0° front to back and side to side. Tacked them in. Next step is to make a panhard bar and fabricate the mounts. Then I'll feel comfortable cutting the rails.

  26. So I learned that a Watts link is a better way to center the axle over the panhard bar with the amount of travel I'm going to have . I bought this pinion mounted, adjustable setup from fellow Hamber Big-Foot, and am waiting for it to get here so I can wrap up the rear suspension. 1394769653736.jpg
We went ahead and cut the chassis and saw the full travel of the bags. I also picked up a set of shocks that have a lot of travel and will work great with the amount of travel I will have (#32207 Monroe). [

We put the bed on to get a better idea of what it will look like both at ride height and with the bags deflated. Needless to say it's plenty low. I never intended for this thing to lay frame so I'm more than pleased where it sits. With the wheels and on it's suspension it will drop another 1/2 inch give or take.

  27. So I moved production up front till the Watts link gets here. It's time to bag the front! I bolted up the cup brackets and the front bags inside the spring pocket.

I tacked a plate to the lower a arm and bolted it up to the chassis. The bag lined up nicely with where the original spring would have sat so I compressed the airbag and both ends were parallel with each other. :D
I traced where the lower part of the bag will mount to the plate on the a arm and made a template out of cardboard so I know where to drill my hole for the bag mount.

  28. Tomorrow I will trim the spring pockets to clear the bag so it doesn't rub and I will mock up the upper a arms, spindles, and rotors so I can put the wheels on and see how it sits on its suspension front and back. :D:cool:

  29. Trimmed the spring pockets and mocked up the upper and lower a arms, spindles, rotors and calipers.
