    Your right.. I just flubbed in my question. Just didn't realize the early Hemis had hardened seats.

    thanks much for the explanation. as I corrected on the original post, my inquiry was a little off as my question was meant towards the lack of lead for both the cushioning and the lubrication. Running without the seals would make a little smoke if the guides/valves were within spec, but I would imagine you would have a mosquito killer in anything on the loose side.

    All Hemis through '55 are supposed to have factory hardend valves & seats. '56 & up only the Chr 300 engines, "power pack(?)"& Dodge/Chr truck engines have them. This is one area where the Tex Smith book really messes up with incorrect (& conflicting) info.

    We have send many engines out the door without stem seals and as yet had no issues with visible smoke. It is a balancing act as far as stem clearance goes but all goes back to not having a flood of oil like as is the case with so many other engines.
