Tough deal man. Just keep looking, things will happen. Seem like everyone that has got canned where I work has ended up with a better job. Wouldn't have happened if they hadn't got canned.

Yeah, that'll solve this fellas problem.....:confused::confused:
Quit wagging your finger at anyone or anything that you don't like. Sure vote, but this mess didn't happen overnight.
This guy needs real solutions, right now, not blame.
I look back on my 59 years, and I could spend the next month sitting here writing a list of what went wrong in my life and who's to blame for it all.
AND it wouldn't do me any good except to waste an entire month.

Americans willingly chose to allow the closing of local factories, shops, plants and businesses 20 years ago when they started to buy cheap imported goods by the carload. Nobody cared that the cars, appliances, even the Levis factories were moving off-shore to try to compete with low priced goods.

I know how we got into this mess and I'm doing everything I can to buy American, but it's almost impossible to do.

The gentleman who started this thread needs help now.

  4. That is a damn smart thing to do. College education doesn't guarantee you a job, but it can sure as hell help! I'm in the software business and it is a DAMN hard business -- so many ups and downs, lots of stress, feast/famine, etc, etc.. We're just another damn manufacturer - our product is software, but we have the same issues/challenges as all manufacturers --> hiring/keeping good & skilled people, costs, foreign competition, technology upgrades, etc..

One thing I've learned is that I have to continuously keep learning, keep reading, keep growing, keep seeing what the kids out of college are doing. By keeping my skill sets and my 'tools' up to date, I can compete (even at 51 years young) -- because what I have what they can't get in college . . . that is practical knowledge, experience, perspective, people skills and political savvy. All of it comes to play and makes my tool box a bit better than theirs - which ONLY has technical skills in it. I swear, if I become complacent and 'rest' on my skill set - for even a year, then I'm no longer relevant.

My best advice --> Always keep investing in yourself - no matter what your job and skill set is!

Second best advice: Vote next November -- we have to turn this sinking ship around! We can't buy our way out of this situation and we're going to be paying up the ass for years to come to "bail" everybody out . . .

haha. thanks. my girl has a decent job, so that helps, plus when I bought my house back in 2004 I wasn't one of the fools to be lured into buying something I couldn't afford, so my mortgage payment is less than most people's rent in this area. I bought the kitchen when I was working, otherwise that wouldn't happen now, just needs to be finished.

I've been a self starter all my life. Not bragging in any sense but I learned real early on that the guy who stands in the batters box the longest and keeps swinging away WILL eventually hit a home run. I've had some of the best jobs in my life when the unemployment was so high everyone gave up looking. Eventually I figgured out you will never get anywhere or make any REAL money working for someone else. I've started, built, and sold 3 businesses with each one being a learning experience. I've made provisions for my own retirement and have been enjoying it for the last 6 years. I've never been rich and never intend to be, just comfortable and able to do what I want. America is truely the land of opportunity. If it doesn't fall in your lap go out and make it happen.

  8. Exactly . . . nobody owes any of us a lifestyle, a living or even an existence. We have the freedoms to make the decisions necessary to live our life as we choose and make something of it -- and a LOT of damn people have died, got shot up, etc -- to fight for us to have the choices we have and to give us the opportunities to make something of ourselves.

Nobody owes me a damn thing -- least of all the government . . . the monkey is on my back to find a way to survive, mitigate all the economic chaos and live my life as free as possible, with as many 'rights' as I can get/keep and hopefully find some successes along the way. I have the dog in this fight - it is called my life . . . . and I'm a lucky bastard to live it.

Whew . . . . too much coffee . . . time to get my ass out in the shop

    "Good Luck"

  12. This is the worst job market I've seen in the 20 years I have been in recruiting (last 13 owning my own firm).

But this year is better than last year, it's gotten better.

Many of you guys are pretty handy, I'd look into doing side jobs for guys building cars etc... put your entrepeneurial hat on. I've started three companies in the last 13 years, and the most recent is my retail wheel biz (www.dragwerks.com). I've never done this kind of retail so it's interesting as to how it works.

Why don't you just send him the money directly and bypass the government. After all, it's not the government that pays unemployment, it's the taxpayers.

They have been trying to move us to mexico for years. We have had shutdowns and layoffs for the last couple years. Thanks to the UNION we are able to fight for new training and protection from fire happy management. America need to wake up and get out of Nafta and quit selling america to china and cheap labor. Just remember, your employer paid in the money to allow you to draw unemployment. It didn't just drop out of the sky! The bigger tax burden on employers is one reason businesses are failing right now and you are losing your job! Good luck and try to find a job as soon as you can!

the only reason I'm still working is my company has a 5 year lease on a 10000 SQ FT warehouse. 3 years left on the lease. hopefully our branch will pick up by the time the lease is up. I spend more time on the HAMB all week than I do actually doing work.

  20. Unfortunately, unemployment pays too well for some!!!!!! Remember, you cannot get something for free without taking it from someone else.

I paid into the unemployment fund for about 14 straight years without ever taking anything out. If it's gonna be a little while before I find another job, I feel like I've put in my time. Like I said before, NJ unemployment pays very well, but that's because they take a lot too, so it's not like I'm gonna take a minimum wage gig at Target pushing carts, it'd actually be a pay cut AND I'd have to go to work.

  22. And therin lies the problem in this country.

I agree, if you see the tag on the top of my blog, I call myself "another statistic". It's a tough predicament to be in: live off unemployment and deal with what is given to me, or go work some schnook job making $10/hr busting my ass. I think we all know the answer to that one. Is this the way I would have guessed my 2010 would be shaping up? Not a chance. Am I fortunate that I can live off of unemployment? Absolutely. I feel bad for the people who have massive mortgages or have significant debt and are really struggling to get by.

Sorry for all that have lost jobs...I just took a 20% pay cut and my boss is living like a king....It sucks to watch owners/management take advantage of their employees that make the company run from sales they generate....It's almost a joke now, cuts everyone's pay after coming back from vacation and says he hates to do it.....The sad thing is nowadays, no matter what you do it's who you know that makes or breaks you....You can be the best in your field but some jerks decisions affect you and your family so they can go untouched.....Oh well, I feel better now!

I thought I had it made as a retiree, I just received notice my health insurance is increasing $702 a month.Along with extra co-pays, higher deductables and persciptions it will be close to $900 a month average. Looks like it's time to get a job.

as much abuse as is getting thrown at this guy, he is still stating his point pretty well, five months paid vacation isnt really asking too much after 14 years of putting into the system. Give him a break. I respect him replying to everyone beating him up.
I am sure you want a job, and I hope you find one.

  28. I'm fortunate with my job but my wife got laid off last June. She was on the putor every day searching for jobs (seems they do that now instead of knocking on doors) anyway she took a job for $15K less just to keep working. We bought a house with a garage and we are gonna open a sandwich shop in the garage and the house is already rented out. I would rather put my fate in the good Lord above and my self than someone else. Moral is: you got skills, hard work and peserverance pays off. Good luck.

thanks man. Believe me, I don't take anything that anyone says too seriously. No one wins in an internet fight. It's not that I don't want to work, it's that the economy and my previous work experience is making it really hard to find a job that makes it "worth" it to get off unemployment. Something might be opening up at my sister-in-laws in the fall, so that's what I've got my sights set on. I go help her out a couple days a month if she gets jammed up, but it's not a real job yet.

  30. I can only talk for Washington state, but the employer is the one that contributes to the unemployment fund...nothing comes out of a workers check. When someone claims unemployment under that employers name the employers rates go up...again, nothing comes out of the employees check. So if I work 50 years for a company I have contributed zero to the unemployment fund.

The one thing money does come out of the employees check is for labor and industries. That amount varies depending on the job.

As to the original poster, that really sucks losing a job like that. But if you were willing to make a big move like that in the first place it sounds to me like you are the type of fella thats not gonna let the grass grow under your feet...I see you bouncing back and more than like for the better. Never give up.
