Well, looks like I'll be hitching a ride to the Turkey Run this year. My painter missed his deadline to get the Jag back to me for the second time. I can't get it back until next week.

I understand snags and delays and other things, but the least he could do is give me a heads up so I could try to get another car ready instead of spending time prepping to get that one done.

****... now there simply isn't enough time between now and Friday to get the roadster ready for Daytona.:( If I had known the Jag wasn't going to be finished, I could have gotten the deuce put back together....dammit, dammit, dammit.....

If only we all had the same problem. I learnt along time ago , you don't rush a painter. Have a happy Thanksgiving anyways .

sorry, I guess you're learning that hot rods and schedules don't mix

  4. Happens every time when you completely rely on someone else.
The only way to eliminate this in the future is to be 100% self sufficient and 100% self reliant.

Some folks have real problems to deal with

    Yeah, I know......I'm just whining....

I'm going to have a good time anyway. I'm taking a buddy's 67 Chevelle instead, so I really have nothing to ***** about.

If I had a Jag and a Deuce there would be no question which one I'd take out.

    The only way to go:):)

Painting is not that tough to learn. A little more difficult to get set up for a safe, clean environment to work in, but not an impossible task.

Maybe the most rewarding part of the build, too.

Nothing better than being in control of every aspect of the project..

  11. Paint work is slow, I'm sure its possible to get stuff done fast with good quality, but that takes alot of skilled people working on only one car at a time. When it comes to paint, i think it's worth the wait for a quality job.

This one is looking good, actually, and isn't far from completion. We did some custom touches that took some time and he's done everything I wanted. I can't ***** about the quality at all. He does a lot of high end stuff and this is going to come out good. But the original three week job has now stretched into six and counting. Nothing he can do when his help doesn't show up. Just the way it goes, I guess.

As far as doing it myself, I can't do that anymore. I actually did most of the welding and much of the bodywork. But painting is messy business and my wife has no tolerance for all the dust and fumes anymore. Add to that the fact that I'm no longer able to physically do a lot of the work. Block sanding a car would be a tough job for me anymore.

It'll all come out good in the end. The calendar has been readjusted to meet reality.

Then when the deadline is missed there is no one else to blame...

I doubt there have been 10 people in the last 150 years who have been "100% self sufficient and 100% self reliant".

hey if you push the painter, and he pushes the paint, and something goe's wrong with the paint ?? who you "gona" call ??? and blame ???

  17. My point exactly, & its probably closer to zero people. Better get used to it.
Something is going to come up and throw stuff off. You never know what it will be or when it will happen but guaranty something will come up. If you rely on yourself, it will be your things, if you rely on others it will be there stuff and everyone that they rely on.

I talked to one of the premiere painters in the area. I asked why it took so long to paint a car. He said, "Would you pay $15K for a paint job that took a week?". He told me he could do a paint job a lot faster, but for the money, people expected it to take a long time.

The good side is that you won't have to worry about your fresh out of the paint booth paint job getting damaged at the run, that means you can go in the daily, park it in the cheap seats and wander around all day without a car to worry about.

The bad part is that it is never as much fun for me to go to an event and have park out in the parking lot.

But now that there isn't a deadline to deal with the car will probably be finished in short order.

When painting my own car Imissed several differant event dates during the process. Now , three years later , my car is finished, the paint looks great , and all those missed events mean absolutly nothing , There will be lots of events , but you only want to paint your car one time . Sit back and enjoy the pride and craftsmanship that your painter is doing for you .

O.K., you've got me curious. Is this a HAMB friendly Jag? and if so is there a build thread? didn't see an album anywhere.

I have painted for a long time. The one thing that puts stress on a painter in a unreal time expectancy to get things done. Even if the customer says, well it doesn't have to be perfect. That's when if you miss something, it right in the middle of a panel and shows up bigger than anything. A small thing/problem in prep sometimes takes longer to fix than a big thing. I like to pace my self to make sure things get done in a certain time frame without problems. Then there are the painters who cram too many jobs in together just for the money. Mike

I'm bringing a '62 T-Bird with Pearl white paint to TRR if you want to buy something to drive until your car is painted.

It's a hot rod, but outside the HAMB boundaries. 83 XJS with a SBC 383, dual quads, Tremec 5-speed. I've been able to trim the weight down to about 3500 lbs, so performance is really good. Its a great handling, fast, smooth, GT car and is normally my daily driver.

Sorry, no build threads, but I'll post a link to pics when the car gets done.

Really? Thinkin maybe he should pay more if it took longer cause that means the job is even better. I paint to. And this whole whining about the painter thing is old. Do it yourself. And if not happy, oh well right? And deadlines? Try to get your own car painted by a deadline and see how much you piss yourself off.

Well, I'm not going to pay him more because his helper got drunk and ended up in jail for two days......;)
