Me either, never had a problem. I read the DMV regs, followed them to the letter, and didn't volunteer any information that was not asked of me at the counter. Did my F1 last year with a weight certificate, VIN verified by local police, bill of sale, proof of insurance, and I even complicated the deal by upgrading to YOM plates at the same time. I had no problem whatsoever, and was amazed at the low fee charged. The DMV office I use has always been helpful.
I do the same thing... also, The Grants P*** DMV is a pretty layed back place.... I just picked up an OT car that hadnt been registered since 08 and it was only $54 to renew the tags.
Unfortunately, you only got half the story from that DMV wonk. You should have transferred ownership to you, BUT kept it non-op. Then you would have only had to pay the few bucks in transfer fees and maybe another small fee to keep the non-op going in your name. Then in January, you could have strolled in and made the reg live and only paid for the current year. All of this could be rendered moot if the date on the transfer do***ent could be changed to sometime in the last 10 days. Which I have heard of people doing, third-hand, from my cousin twice removed, because I would never do that myself.
