oh and Gnashty1, i'm glad to hear that, most people see me in the rear veiw they get scared. haha. probally seen me driving my jenkey hoopdey 84' Monte Carlo around.
and your right about stopping, the 49' ended up blowing through 2 intersections till i got the brakes dialed in right, and ended up in the back of a station wagon, oops. so yeah, disk brakes are better then espestose.

They'd still give you shit even if it was "period" correct. Sounds to me like you're dealing with a bunch of Chevy restorers, so yeah you ruined it as far as they are concerned since it's not completely stock.

I'd personally put a 351W in it just to send them off the deep end. I get plenty of flack when I take my '49 Ford anywhere. The traditional kustom car guys like what I've done, the Ford restorers give me the look of death. The rat rodders wonder why there is no tilt column and buckets. Funny how many of the local members of the Early Ford V8 club give me shit for modifying my car but they're running SBC automatics. So yeah, fuck'em. Have fun. I'd like to see the cars the critics own.

    I personally wouldn't own a car that I couldn't modify.

Be polite. Listen with interest. Go your own way. Works every time.

  7. At your age I'm surprised you don't have some Honda, Toyota or Kia with a fart pipe. Congratulations for having an American Iron. If you get ripped every time someone tells you what you should or not do you'll be ripped all of the time. Like someone else said on here "until they are payin' for it" piss on 'em!!!

You should do whatever makes "YOU" happy. This site is full of traditional posers that don't have a thing to offer you except for there unwanted opinion. The stuff that was already on your car will work fine until you have the money or desire to change it.

    Later,

Tell them ...."look, I don't tell you how to trick out your Windstar or whatever"

I'm also on a tight budget, more tighter now that I heard my 440 block needs 40 over....:(, but it's YOUR car, build it how you like, take as long as you like, use the pats you like....unles, as was suggested, someone hands over some cash to fund the project for you....:):)

Be true to your self and your vison, change and adapt it as you need to or require with what life throws at you.

    Run it however you can.

they don't make them any more! Good luck, keep up the good work !

    Uh oh...You aren't traditional...damn you.

You changed the oil...it is no longer traditional oil.
You filled up the gas tank...it is no longer traditionally fueled with leaded gasoline.
You changed the brake shoes so it is no longer traditional brake pad material.
You changed the tires that are no longer traditional NOS rubber.
You changed the key to the ignition to the one you had made at Ace hardware because the old one was worn out so you are no longer traditional.

People can find a million silly ways to point their finger at you and call you out but I tend to change things on my car because the traditional parts sucked. You are young, give them some attitude of youth and give them the one fingered salute as you enjoy being young knowing you probably wont die of a heart attack or stroke anytime soon.

That thing has a truckload of potential; Look at the seat!

Tell anyone who question what you've got that they should have bought so they could do what they're saying. That or tell them to fuck off. Either way they'll know where you stand.

    Keep posting pix.

  14. I like your car. I had a 58 impala back in the day it had the 348 with tri power. I took it out and installed a 421 supre duty pontiac. I found out that someone is allways trying to tell others ( what you ought to do) I am fond of telling people that you can think whatever you want you are the one that has to live with your thoughts. I say do it to please yourself. However you do it you cant go wrong if you like and enjoy it:cool:. OldWolf

You're still young, I raised 2 kids, and what I've observed about young people is that they want to stand out as long as they fit in. You're responding to peer pressure, if you like your car, who cares what they say? What are they driving? Enjoy your car and your life and do it your way.
If you don't, you'll end up an old man in Florida some day shopping for white loafers and a matching belt!

My 37 had a IFS stubbed in when I bought it. Let's see, I need to try a find another 37 Olds frame to start over?! No way, I'm keeping it cause it will be hidden most of the time anyway... Do what you want with your car and budget and don't let them get to you.

  19. stagernwings, you might want to think this post through again. HotRodToomer probably isn't hanging with "8 to 10" 60+ year old geezers who give him shit about not being "traditional". Let me know if I'm wrong HotRodToomer. Most of us geezers into the old stuff are open minded and have rejected the antiquers, restorers, Bloomington Gold Corvette fanatics and shit like that to do our own thing "with our precious parts". Check the guys who posted encouragement, they are of all ages. I would rather help and encourage a young guy who actually wants to build an old American car, instead of a tuner car. If you were in my neighborhood I'd be helping you!

Great start on the Del Ray HotRodToomer. You are going to have a great driving, safe, fun car. If those guys don't appreciate it, find new friends that do!

I got two points of view here:

    1) What are you doing stopping long enough for anyone NOT in a bra to talk to you????

    2) I'm certainly not a 'traditional snob' but I'd be the first one saying "shame bout them valve covers" as YOU said "8/10" so dont worry about all these guys on here saying "I would never rag on you like that" coz they WOULD :D. In the 80s, the old guys were all telling us how to make cars that are "traditional" NOW......and telling them to go to hell while I go BILLET was kinda backwards too

Just ask them, politely, "I don't suppose you got some spare Corvette covers that I could adapt?" coz you NEVER know

and most importantly of all, as a youngin, :

1 on the road is worth 10 in the garage :D

so drive the shit outta it young fella, and fill the bench seats with girlies :p

Why would ya go backwards and put drums on it instead of disks (ect. ect. ect.) Its your car build it the way you want and screw the rest. Its cool to see the young guns building old tin. Good luck finding a new job.

Traditional purists are just like restorers, they just like to go faster.

I'm building a period perfect car. The period is 2005-2008 and I reckon I've nailed it. Sure some of the parts are old and some are even desirable for the purists. But it aint no 30's, 40's or 50's hotrod. I'm building it with the parts I like in the style I like in the 2000's.

I call these guys "PBR-Chainers." They're like Gold Chainers, only don't dress as well, and rather than sit in folding bag-chairs behind their trunk at all the cruise-ins and talk shit about other people's cars, they stand around drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, next to their rat turds, talking shit about other people's cars.

    Treat both accordingly.

In the late fifties a 265/283 was a 'new' engine and how many rods of that era used them? So how long have the centerbolt heads been around eh????

ok we have established that its your car do as you want. you are 18 and you have a hell of a nice car!!!! dont sweat the little stuff, the valve covers keep coming up. well make it look like an early olds motor with the olds center bolt valve covers, paint it the oldsmobile color and pop a bat wing air cleaner on and you cant tell the difference instant traditional for little money. heck my "Traditional " 51 Ford has Vintage Air...........but then again im old and i have to have some creature comforts lol.

I wouldn't stress it too much. At the end of the day, you paid for the car, you pay the insurance, you pay the registration and inspection, and you are the one who has to drive her. I get shit from people about trivial things and I just look at them like they are high and move on with my day. It isn't their car.... it's mine. Personally, I don't get people chopping a survivor car or scrapping an original engine with column ship and dropping in a 350/450.... however, it is their car. I respect it as long as they respect me. John

yeah, to answer some questions, im a mutt with my friends, the car club im part of im the youngest, the second youngest.......i think 50. but they are not the ones who rile me, its mostly the people i know at the car shows and a few other people. then my friends my age drive newer cars and think my 84' Carlos a jenkey hoopdey. so its not my friends, just the people around me really.
and yeah, it was the best feeling in the world dragging that car home on the trailor, it was almost a sign of fate, the truck we used to tow the 49' to wyoming, michigan and back in one day, then load the 58' up and drag it home, the trans blew the next morning, i sat looking at that thing, still on the trailor for at least 2 hours, it was freezing rain but i didnt car, my mind was turning and i saw everything i wanted too in it. i know im damn lucky being this young and having what i do, i worked my ass off and after the assurence from you guys im even more proud to say, "This Mother Fuckers Mine And I'll Be DAMNED To see it not be drivien hard!"
im gonna make it cool, so some dont like it, i can deal with that, i'm just glad to know i wont roll into Billitproof this year, (Cross your fingers that ill get it done), and get flack, because when i got the truck, having that 454 in it made people get up and yell at me. literaly i had a guy jump up when he found out it had a BBC and call me a fucking idiot. i dunno.

I've been driving customs or hotrods since I was 16 and that was 45 years ago when I bought my 51 Merc.

There will always be a group of mouthbreathers who feel that it is their right to find fault with other peoples cars even if it isn't a fault.
I've run into these same characters and self styled experts since I started going to rod runs in 1973. I would say that the majority of them don't have a rod or custom at the show and a fair portion of them don't have a rod, custom or restored car at all. They show up at events and look for things to find that "they" don't think is right or doesn't have workmanship that suits them. I've had at least a hundred of them tell me that I ruined my truck because I chopped it. Not one of them knew that it was a 75.00 beater when I bought it That didn't have one straight fender on it.

The solution on the engine is simple. Don't open the hood at shows. It looks better with it closed and it isn't down at Joes used car lot attempting to attract attention. I don't like the looks of my truck with the hood open and have only attended one run where an open hood was required.

Make the car the way you want it and can afford because the only person you have to satisfy is yourself.
