A few months ago someone ask me about cleaning rust out of an MC gas tank. I explained the molasses trick to him, even told him where to get it locally. I saw him Sat. night and found out he ruined his tank. For some reason he completely filled it and then sealed it, rubber freeze out plug in the fill and capped the drain, maybe because of the smell. He left it set a few weeks while he was on vacation!! It built so much pressure it bulged the tank beyond use and then blew molasses all over his garage. It happened long enough ago that it was now funny, I'm sure he wasn't laughing while cleaning it up. Be carefull out there!!
Shoot... rats get cancer after you feed em Sweet-n-lo 80 or so times their body weight in a day.... dumbass... I'd like to think that HAMB smarts are a bit better than that...
I dunno, think its an American thing....... January 15, 1919 North End, Boston, Massachuses............ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Molasses_Disaster Doc.
Fermentation is a funny thing. I'm sure in those instructions it said not to seal up the tank for long periods of time. I could be wrong but I'd go back and read them one more time.
Goes to show you that someone will always find a way to screw up something simple. He is the kind of person that the government puts the stupid warning labels on products for.
Thats why when we were makin hard cider as kids, we alway took a rubber stopper and a bent glass tube from chemistry lab, then ran a piece of tubing from the glas tube into a container of clean water sitting lower than the top of the cider. That's kinda how we came up with the one man brake bleeding trick.......
Hey doc they overfilled a tank to cause that and the claim is on really hot days you can occassionally get a wiff of molasses still around that area,But the ground was covered several feet deep with it for blocks!
molasses ?? is this the stuff that cows eat as a supplement,I need to clean out an old rusted tank ,whats the go ,how much is needed ?
hahahahahahahahaha! Laughing with him, not at him... When I make homemade hooch, I always put a rubber glove or balloon on the outlet (well sealed) and wait until it goes back down before opening, it keeps the container from blowing up, and lets me know when the wee beasties are done working their magic...I wonder if that would be a good indication of when a tank was through being cleaned? Remnants of the last time I cleaned a tank with molasses still lingers on the concrete where it bubbled over, amazing how it cleaned the inside of that O/T motorcycle's tank, yet won't come off some of the tools that were nearby. I could probably find them in the dark from the smell.
Ah...., let's see. You will need enough to fill the tank, all the way. Cap off all the openings of the tank and then go on vacation for a couple of weeks. At least that is how the last guy did it. I think he also said it helped clean the garage. Sure am glad I learned all this stuff on the HAMB. Neal Putting aside the B.S. The supplement is the stuff. You can dilute it with water. It will only remove the rust that it comes in contact with so the tank should be full. It works slow so leave it for a few days and check. I never used it in a gas tank but have on other items.
