The SM was the world fastest production car in the 70's.
You have to be very carrefull when you restart an SM, the hollow vave have to be replaced by solid core one if you don't want one to break and destroy the engine, a tack of weld at the end of the timing gear on the cams so you're sure they will never slip (a problem with people who drive hard) and the lower timing chain is rarelly replaced because the engine has to be pulled out and ends up streching too much. This are the 3 problems that lead people to say that this is an unreliable car.
The wife still doesn't know about this car, but in some months I will have no other option but to tell her or sell the car to avoid a drama (I already have 2 other projects on top of this one)

Whoa! Dude! Once I got binoculars to read the text, I was utterly blown away. Great project. So far out of the box it could only be French. Excellent.

Chrisp - Hope you can work things out so you can keep this car. But we do what we have to do: I had to sacrifice my "masterpiece" to avoid losing my house a couple years ago - it worked, but I'm still full of regret. You have great vision, passion and skill...

Thats cool......the grille on my 36 Dodge is from a Citroen traction just like it!

  11. Great job Chrisp. That was such a cutting edge car when it was introduced, it only makes sense to try to take it to the next level.

Keep up the detail photo journal of the build. I love learning from you guys and gals with more skill than me....

Hopefully you are going to retain the OEM hydralic suspension? Or is it too late? Gary

Yes, this is the same car, it's back in France after 36 years. Yes I keep all the original hydro suspension.
I don't know when I'm going to finish it cause I have to finish a french 32 2 door sedan for somebody and most likely make a 4 door 49 Chevy into a chopped coupe for somebody else, once again the customers are first...

Oh, thats the Citroen SM, that You mean.
In this case the DS has a two liter engine, should be the same like in the car before, the 11CV.

    Nice work, by the way!

Andre Citroen and Henry Ford were friends, which You can see in their cars of the thirtys.....

    Yes I did.

Andre Citroen went to visit the Ford plant in Dearborn in the 20's to see how to build car efficiently, when he came back to France he applied what he learned ... and became N°1 in France. French car manufacturers were largely inspired by US production before WWII and up to the 50's, for exemple it's hard to tell the difference between an early 30's Renault and a Chrysler

    Chris,

    As a Citroen DS owner, I salute you. (Mine's a '69 with the 2.3 liter and a 5 spd out of a '73.)

I like this project a lot and I hope you get the chance to finish it.

  27. Nice motor the Goddess,
amazing how modern the design looks for a car that came out in the fifties.

Certainly was very advanced for it's time,
Thinking about it, it's almost a surprise that so few Citroen's get custom treatment,
the being able to lower the ride hieght by just moving the clamp on the sway bar you would have thought made the suspension tempting if nothing else.

Look forward to seeing it done.

Just thought I'd bump this post. I vacationed in France this year and saw a few of these DS's out and about. You can see one currently in the TV show "The Mentalist". It is a cool car and after looking at the Gene Windfield link that MercMad provided regarding all the cool cars from Bewitched and other shows, I am starting to understand the subliminal love I have for all these modified cars here on the HAMB. So how about it Crisp, any updates?
    Merci Beaucoup for the post!
