Called this AM, it's up to him. Pulling the 61 out to "valuate" the condition. It's extremely rough. But you need to look at those 57/58 blocks, and a complete one in the celler, might be more in that other pile of blocks to the left side. Some nice cranks too, don't know what Cu In. How about 394s? Hate to see it rust away
I may need you and Brett for a few hours tommorow or friday?? let me know if you can maybe bleed brakes etc
Looking nice! Here's hoping you will be driving it again soon... That looks like you have it solid mounted. Is that the way it was before? Are the engine mounts solid also?
Just got back to this thread. Spent last couple days swapping rear out on 54 CHevy just to find the old one is better than what I just put in . Guess what I am doing tomorrow night! Anyhow, looks good. Might be a little drafty without the whole 'body-thingy' but as long as it runs and you have eye protection/goggles you should be fine. Let me know if I can help at all. Wont be back on here til tomorrow night but you have my ph#. ps, my new favorite quote is : "let the bashing and questions begin Fuckers"
Frank i`ll let ya know Patman Thanks Buddy appreciate it I am trying Yes its solid mounted for now atleast we`ll see. They had broken mounts and the front had a very thin rubber piece mud flap?? I cut a old racing tire up and folded 2 pieces together and used that it keeps splitting pancaking so idk yet what i am going to do but i am not going to let it sit while i rdo the whole thing thats a winter project. Joe sorry to hear of your troubles it sucks but we all go through it, when i see ya we will talk about all i have had and i am not even close to done yet lol but its coming say hello to Eli for me. Hope to see ya soon maybe i will have to take a few hours off and meet down south if your still going.. Body will be back on tomorrow then the wiring, axle seal, tranny seal, run positive cable, brake fluid and line to junction block from master bleed brakes, fit shifter and floor as the hurst will be in a different place, and whateverelse i am forgetting Glad you like the quaote lol I figured i would get shit for removing the body, oh fucking well for 100k they can do what they want I am beat I`m out here`s some pics of what i got done so far
Dave, If you don't have any other crossmembers besides the F&R spring crossmembers, you need to keep that rubber center engine mount IMO. That chassis will twist with body roll, and with solid bell mounts not tied to eachother, there will be a lot of stress on the 4 new bell mount bolts screwed into the Hydro. Keep the front on rubber until you see how that new mount setup holds up. Before you put the body back on, I'd jump on one rear corner of the chassis with your full weight, and look at the motor/trans to see if it's taking a beating from twisting.
Frank i am no chassis expert or fabricator but i did all the above, It does tie in the frame rails and stiffens it up for the better as for long period idk, but i have to make a plan and see what if i want to change it I guesss it would be the right thing to do but we`ll see. The front is on rubber but it isnt right keeps pushing out I will change that this winter with the hurst mounts and rubber puck style ford mounts or somethingelse havent got that far. This is just for the summer. The jumped on the rear and the chassis shows it works as suppose to IK i have to see what happens and put some thought into it but want to drive it not be building it all summer Ik i need to becareful though gotta run ttyl
I meant that the stock Olds trans mount crossmember, ties both trans mounts together. That takes a ton of stress off of those 4 bell mounting bolts, because the eng/trans weight is sort-of just pushing straight down. With 2 seperate bell mounts not tied to eachother, the stress on the upper bolt is towards the center of the car, and the bottom bolt is stressed to the outside of the car. Kind of like a hinge effect, if that makes sense. Being solid mounts, that complicates things from an engineering standpoint, because the bolt shank strength becomes much more important. Like a flywheel bolt has a tight fitting shank above the threads, so it actually acts like a solid dowel pin. If your 4 bell bolts have threads all the way to the head of the bolt, or, if the holes in the new plates are a bit loose, those mounts will "work" as the car twists. A crossmember under the trans, to tie both mounts together, completely eliminates the massive stress on those 4 bolts, "if" that crossmember is strong. If it was a 283 chevy with a light 3 speed stick, it would be plently strong as it is, but these Olds engine trans combos are so overweight
Dave, I keep forgetting to say... If you borrowed a Ross lightweight Rocket for the summer, I'd bet those mounts would be fine. I keep thinking your 303 has that wicked heavy iron J2 intake and stock iron exhaust manifolds, etc, like my 303. Duh on me. Now, see if Tony will let you borrow one...
HAHAHA I cant afford that good stuff.. Geesh IK everyone think i got all that stuff now but if they only new other than the intake everything is heavy hell lokk at that big generator and those headers weigh more than a stock exhaust manifold the flange is 3/8 plate. I do know it ties everythig alot better than it was. I think i will be fine for a few miles this summer.. If your afraid to ride in it i will go slow. I hit a bridge expansion joint on the highway here and i tell ya the fenders hit the tires, it jarred my back with a Violent solid hit through car and i thought it folded something up the car got a little wiggle not bad but i think back to that and think if that didn`t destroy anything not much else could. This has to be a improvement on what was there and even though they had it setting on mounts they where hard broke and the mount was way more flexible and twisting so again idk we`ll see hope it works. If not i will buy a new socal chassis and go to good guys events.. LOl
So,What's left?....to break?? Im impressed by your nonwillingness to throw in the towel on this one! You had us all nervous a few weeks ago with that bullsh*t about selling it off.
I hope nothing slick... I am not a quiter @ anything just a poor boy who likes expensive things and break a wrecking ball with a qui-tip (Thanks Tony) lol Umm if i wouldve got what was offered it woulda been gone.... or not idk i dont want to sell I have to much fun with it and what would i do til midnight everynight?
Dave, I just got your message. Give me a call if you need a hand !!!! Either tonite or tomorrow afternoon.
Ummm yeah i am having a work party tomorrow everyone is invited, pay is (none) just water, beer and a good time maybe some pizza.. Amyone can come over :d had to make a new brake line as the kcikdown rod is in the way now so did that got body bolted back down but alot of work left but it will be better when its done. Lol things left to do intstall seats they had them tached to floor i may run bolts now ,fuel line, bleed brakes, rewire complete car it was a mess but it is what it is. Add gear oil, axle seal rs,steering wheel, throttle cable. Kickdown to carb, tranny fluid.hook up temp gauge ,oil line yaday yada yada like you care off like a prom dress and back to work!!
Dave, what time is good and where ??? It looks like your engine shop in the pic but it could be elsewhere ???
So after all the snivelling and update pictures...are you gonna make it to the Rumble or not???? You're kickin some serious ass, Dave...you know what it's all about and are makin it happen. I hope to catch up with you again this weekend in CT. Keep the fire goin!!!
Brett yes at the Machine shop not the Race shop.I will ber here from 7 am til whenever i leave midnight etc with a little help i may make it but its goin to be close! Kevin as i told Brett its going to be close, honestly IDK maybe I havent even begin to snivel yet... I am working my ass off trust me but i need a brake once in awhile actually having a beer 1st one in a long time usually go the grey goose route . Thanks for keep ing me going! Slick its not maroon, shit brindle brown I think its Hondurhas maroon actually but with a little something something and very little flake.. Man i am sweating my ass off, a friend stopped in i had the torch going and then grabbed the grinder was fitting the trans dipstick finally i feel someone there and i turn and he says sumbitch you are nuts you should do car warriors you could build a car all by yourself in 48 hrs Just part of the deal i said as i kept working he didnt offer to help but thats okm he would get in the way anyway you know the type but a good guy.. Anyway new positive cable run, not riding on the driveshaft anymore! I am kinda pissed i am, taking a little charactor outta the car wish i was getting paid to do this
swapped the old rear back in tonite. valve cover gaskets and some small things. heading down tomorrow after work-i think. maybe catch you there.
Glad your making out good. Have fun be safe hope to see you there but idk yet still here working on it. Wired the Generator and volt reg. water temp gauge etc got alot to do, wont know til tomorrow night call me if you get a chance, we`ll chew the fat.. I`m beat but i better keep plugging its all in how bad you want it! I was thinking of taking my everyday driver down just to go but what fun would that be
Yeah idk i may stay and work on Jake instead it will something fuckin out.. We`ll see. Maybe i`ll find someone to go down with and enjoy the day... Here`s some pics Idk if these cool little gems i scored are to antiquey for my car bit am thinking they would be cool for turn signals. And notice the hack job they did to the front subrail, and how it is going to interfere with the shifter need to change that hmm may replace the wholse sub and notch it for shifter wheres Frank when you need him . Had to notch the new trans mount added a bit of character back to it
Dave, there was a hilarious cartoon video on hamb about Los B'ardo/Bellflower, and the guy said "they copied me". Not funny if you never saw it, but YOU copied me... I put on the exact same lights, same brand.. Why'd the new mounts need mods? I suppose I could figure out something on the cross sub rail, but my daily won't make a 1.5hr trip...twice. I would not spend 250 on a gennie rail and then cut it.
What are those lights frank i have tyhe buckets aswell no markings . I am not going to cut a gennie i am going to adda filler piece or bend up a new one. If look in pic the tranny dipstick tube wouldnt clear i didnt think it would but was hoping, with the channel it just is to low
Ditch the light little lights, you dont need them & they kind-of dont match, turn signals are totally 80's, your arm out the driver side window more traditional. You need shorter headlight stands too.
Been super busy and havnt been able to catch up on your thread for a few weeks. You just cant win, but thats how they go, it isnt anyfun when you dont have to work on em right? maybe not! JEFF
I ben thinking that i just picked them up for a deal and liked them. I wanted to change the stands aswell but its the way they did it back then so be it,i woulda liked short stands with 32 big ugly lights Jeff I like working on it but not in this degree all the time you know little things all the time and wish i had my son interested in it or a friend on occasion it wouuld be nice to have someone around but some people get in the way. I have alot of fun when driving it.
Lower lights would take away from the original build ( me thinks ) Also, I would prefer turn signals. Hell, probably 90% of the clowns on the road wouldn't have a clue on hand sigs and I'd want them at night for sure.
Frank you wont offend anyone here they dont post here anymore I Like the ugly look but Jake dont need it he`s fine the way he is IMO. Time to get plugging on the car work is doen for the day i hope!! But someone could still fuck it up! I need a pit crew for this car
