Son and i just watched it. You need to paint it yellow, because that scene looked like American Graffitti. My son said it looks like it was taken with an old camera, too. Man, we had to rerun it 3-4 times for the shifting sequence, because it sounded bogged down too much at the end. It shifted out of first in the gutter, and then into 3rd crossing the centerline. Yikes. That car is so %^$# cool, Dave. Dang.
YEp it does shift out to quick give me time i had just got it running Lol I just shift it like a std.... only been 10 miles maybe it is some hot on it today whooooooooo!!!!!!
I played it again. I was wondering when it went to 4th. I think the last shift was when that car was in the way? I don't know. I was just wondering if it was already shifting to 4th as it went over the centerline, but i don't think so, I think it was the 2/3 shift there.
http://forums.aaca.org/f138/hydramatic-shift-adjustments-329820.html Just a very short read on 53 stock trans from AACA. The guy at the last post knows his stuff from what others have said. I was just poking around to see what controls, or affects the shifts vs. road speed. I also read on Wikipedia, a long read on how these transmissions work. Almost like a lock up converter at highway speed. ...but they also said "the cast iron Hydramatic was the heaviest auto trans ever made" (back then) he,he, that goes right along with these boat anchor motors too go big, or go home. That's what F/G said once
The Governor is what controls the shifts vs road speed. However, the kickdown linkage will have some effect as well. if you really lean on the kickdown linkage, it will delay the upshifts-holding each gear out longer. Remember, this is an Unsupercharged Competition unit he is using. Some fine tuning may be necessary for happier street use. It was designed for full throttle acceleration. B&M had three units/styles to chose from-street strip, unsupercharged competition, and supercharged competition. I will try to post some B&M factory literature later this week. I would start by swapping the original governor from the old trans into the B&M unit.
Video works for me, Larry must be on a Commodore 64! Video needs to be longer, go out and do it again! Please!
Frank i had seen a similar post on that info thanks, AG lol yeah my shop is on a similar street idk what setting the camera was on glad you and the boy liked it. This tranny is cast and heavy. Also Frank it doesnt vibrate at all rides good well like a Hot Rod not like a sreet rod. But i need shocks and a new spring mounts. I am not going to drive Jake anymore til i make sure i am not going to hurt tranny and figure out what to do with the shifts. Thansk for info Joe hope to talk to you this week hope you ahd a good time @ T-ville sounds like you did. dave looks like the tranny is working well, glad to see. does it shift on its own or is a manual shift only, always wondered about that when i was thinking about using it.
SJ It shifts on its own but way to quick So i am shifting it like a std but havent been driving it,waiting til i figure it out a bit dont want to burn it up. It seems to be a good piece not a sluch box like i had made the car quicker . 32hudson I am thinkng about going but idk yet we`ll see i need to call the hegler bros or the people in charge find out some rules to maybe they will let me make a run or 2
FIrst to second shift usually happens really fast. Not too much you can do there. first is a real short gear, remember it is just under 4:1. it should be holding second a bit longer then third and forth/high. These trans were designed to get heavy cars rolling using relatively high gears-3.23:1 was common. They didnt use an OD so they used supper low first gear to get rolling. If second, third and the shift to forth are ok, I wouldnt be concerned with a real short first. The car is light and makes enough torque to get roling without bogging. I'll try to call later this week. Talk soon.
yes Joe IK 1-2nd is quick thats ok but 3-4 is as quick, drove the snot outta of it today, its a stick with out the 3rd pedal put it it 2nd hit 3rd leave it there for the most part until you get to 55+ with the gear it needs 4th fun to drive but i would like tom see if i could change 2-3-4 a little if not oh well. I am good with it just want to make sure what i am doing wont hurt it. TTYS
Met up with Dave today at Kimball's Farm for a little 4th of July celebration. Lobster rolls and onion rings then we had birthday cake!! Check out this pair of deuces. Quite the difference in profiles.
