I do! Glad to hear. Scared me there for a minute! haha If memory serves me correctly, you have a B&M Hydro in the coupe right now. Are you just running it as you got it, or did you have someone go through it and rebuild/refresh?
It's as I got it tranny is good i want another for parts and to rebuild. I have 3 old's motors other than the one in car. I may sell the spare stuff to fund the new project. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ok, exactly one year ago, coming HOME from the Fallout Show you broke that joint. The Fallout show is today 364 days later, so your 1 year warrantee on the U-joint should be OK all kidding aside... that rear suspension has run it's course, and needs a tad bit of attention. ...no more TV at night Dave, get under your heap and fix it good
Thanks it sucks wanted to drive it yesterday hope to have it fixed this week. I do have fun with Jake for sure I don't drive it easy its not what it was built for lol I just got to fix the rear end and it will be fine. Yes frank your right I have the same thought. Now what to do
Dave I've been thinking since you called. If you are cutting off the Olds arms this week, and rewelding to fix the pinion angle, you will still be running the arms too straight because you want to hook the front parts to the insides of the framerails.. (See pic below of what the Olds angle was when new). Yes, that will help, and no more U-joint breaks, but it's still not correct if you rebuild the chassis like you want to later. Now, if you do not bring the arms inwards a lot more during this "temporary repair", you would have to cut the Olds arms back off of the rear end again, during the final rebuild later. That is not what I'd do. My idea might sound like crap, but it will make this temporary mods go much quicker and be strong enough that you can't break it: I have a pair of Chevy truck arms here if you want. Just listen before saying NO. If you go with the Olds arms welded to your housing again, it will be a royal bitch to: -get the pinion angle correct during setup for welding, as well as keeping it squared to the car, and doing these tasks while building new rear spring perches for the 32 spring, while trying to keep the same ride height. It's not going to be easy fighting all those jobs, including keeping the rear tires centered in the fender curves. If you go with Chev arms, these are held to the axle tubes with one big U-bolt per side. The arms sit on angle mounts that will be welded to the rear, but you can just bolt this stuff up during the mockup. That way, you can adjust pinion angle by spinning the rear in those unwelded pads that the arms bolt to. Once the entire mockup is done and rechecked, then weld those chevy pads to the tubes last. The issue with correctly angled-in arms, either Olds or Chev, is that you'll need a crossmember at mid frame, like the P&J ladder bars. I can't recall where your driveshaft runs in relation to framerail height. So, that crossmember may dip down, or dip up, but I doubt it can be straight across. You can order one of those bare U shaped front engine mount saddles made from pipe, or get a friend with a pipe bender to bend some thickwall black pipe. Then weld two flat 1/4" plates to the frame to bolt it to. Now 4 simple flat tabs to run the big bolt through each front chevy arm bushing..easy.. Like I was saying if you start any repairs this week; measure the height of the rear spring perch eyes from the ground at ride height, and lock the spring with a spring spreader while at ride height. That stuff will help a lot during redo. Back to work for me; here is the A that just came in. It's in the upper barn, and I may get it in the shop quick.... after I fix my sons truck door sunday
I`m so stoked!!!!!!!! i just got off the phone with Russ Dill! and he was a previous owner of my car!!!!!!!!!! He`s going to send me pictures of when he owned it and he painted the car green as i suspected its one of the 3 colors of the car.. Man its so cool and he bought the body from a gentlemen in Redlands name Tom Martinez. Car also had very big tube front shocks on it and a flathead then he put the olds in it with a adapter and ford trans. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Thanks 1blown57 My budddy scott googled the guys name and it came up w phone number I called him a year later lol.. So far what i got from a former owner is (he had to run to a appointment) so couldn`t talk long, Is that he bought just the body in the mid 50`s from a gentlemen named Tom martinez from redlands maybe Mentone put it on a frame he had. It had a flathead in it for awhile then he put a olds with a adapter and the 3spd ford trans. Also it had the banjo rear still. He said with excitement does it still have those big ugly tube shocks on the front? They where big and ugly and it road stiff. When i got it it was primer he said I then painted green. He said i was in the air force reserves and the guard at the gate asked me where the hell you think you going with this thing! He wouldnt let me bring the car on base and had to leave it outside the gate and wait til a friend i knew pulled up to get me a ride in. He did say he sold the car about 63-64 wasnt sure But the plates on the car i got are stamped 63 so sound s about right. He ended up trading it for a BSA motorcycle and some money but never got the money as the olds blew up on the new owner and didnt want to pay him, so he said i am having trouble with the BSA lets just trade back and he never heard back from the guy. He said to email him my contact info and he would send me some pictures of the car when he had it!! Way cool..I sent him my info and havent heard anything yet. I suspect the next owner put the hydro and the olds rear in aswell as the seats. He did say he had a bench seat in it with blanket and a plywood back. He actually got married and owned the car back the and is still married to the same woman. I hope to hear back from him either email or phone I asked as many questions as i could but was giddy just hearing him tell me what he could. I could hear him smile and laugh as he told me about the car. He even asked me if i wanted to sell it.. He owns a 32 5w stocker now he said. Hope to hear back from him. I`ll post more when i get more. I gotta look up this Tom Martinez guy!!
Dave, LSR is just around the corner.....find someone to run the shop and make your hotel reservation .
I thought about you tonight when I made my reservation, I didn't get stupid like I did last year and book too many rooms. Take care and drive the crap oughta your car.
Ha Thanks for thinking of me.... I will be thinking of you guys and the goodtime your having.. My only employee passed away 3 weeks ago so that has really put a Hinder on things now. Wish i could be there but just cant do it. Have fun take alot of pics!!! Oh and i have driven my car quiet a bit but it wont be out this summer as i need to do some serious maintenance on a few things. Catcha later Dave
you're lucky dave! My 32 came with a title. I googled the guys name and luckily got ahold of him. he was very happy to hear from me and excited to tell me about what little he knew but his ex wife had burned every picture he had He said my car was a basket case drag car when he got it in the early 80's. He just put it back together, replaced the injection on the small block with a carb and drove it for a year before selling it. by the time I got it the chassis had disappeared.... so really all I found out about the car from my phone call was that it had an injected small block chevy at one point....
Yes Kev I sure am, To have a great car is very lucky... haven't heard from Russ he was going to send me some pics but haven't gotten them yet. I am still hoping I hear from him idk if I should try to contact him again maybe give it some time... Russ was excited about telling me what he could remember that was cool to hear in his voice.
There is really something about a Hot Rod with traceable history that sets it apart from all the others. I love this stuff!
Holy sh*t Dave I just noticed this, great score and awesome project. Very much subscribed. Wow -freezer'
Yes there is this car may have not been a show winner but is cool. FB your late to the party but sure glad you made it its been a fun 3 years with Jake, so lucky to have found the car.. Heres a pic at TRJ 2013 Picture by AL Consoli
I should have said 'bookmarked', I've come through about 1/2 of the build log. I'm loving it, be cool 'freezerburn
Not me 330ft and the shut down they give I cant stop.. I got no gear in the car either. Everyone is gearing there cars and doing the chassis its suppose to be for fun.. If i wanted to build a DRAG car I would but I don't have time, If I ever fix redo the car maybe we can run-em but its not safe right now no brakes throttle sticks and rear end breaks when I have at it. You got wildwood brakes and all that fancy STUFF.... I got 80 year old technology.
i do have discs--but its a street caah--thrown together with swap meet parts----the way they were and should be built---your car looks tough any way you look at it---get a welder already
