Great read. Felt like I was there with the desert wind whipping my hair around, smelling the Harleys and 18-wheelers.

    as a former (and hopefully future) Arizona resident, I can't picture a better place to own and drive a vintage roadster. Thanks for the great read!

    P.S. as far as mexican beer, Negra Modelo!

  5. A dark beer?

    Regardless, I'll give it a shot.
    The local market carries it.

    What I can't find here in Kingman is Lone Star.

    The boys from Texas talk it up pretty good and we all know Texans are never wrong . . . right?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Lotsa hot rods in Kingman....
    Enjoyed the story. Hadn't been to Arizona in a few years, but spent a lot of hours cruising in southwest Texas, down towards Big Bend. I love that country! ****ed having to move to Florida, but 80 degree weather in January ain't too bad, and Texas will be there when I get back someday. By then, I won't have work to bother me anymore.
    Great read and, as a fellow open car driver, can relate to the medicinal qualities of just gettin' in the car and driving. Was in that area in mid August last year and is certainly "perfect" open car country:D
    Great story, thanks for sharing. Motivation to get my roadster on the road. I could use the pick me up on occasion.
    Great motivator - I'm ready to get to work on making mine roadworthy.
  12. They brew some good beer.
    Funny thing is, couple years back a couple of tourist busses pulled into the hotel we were at.
    Watched a number of Germans and Austrians order "Budweiser."
    They seemed to like it, but I thought they'da gotten about the same effect from a gl*** of ice water and a Valium....:p
    C9,
    Thanks for bringing back some fond memories. Back in 2001 I made the return trip to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:pFlorida</ST1:p from the LA Roadster show solo due to my buddy selling his roadster there and having to stay a day or two extra to close the deal. Had done some Route 66 research before the trip out and figured this was my chance to see some of the road at my own pace.<O:p</O:p
    I went along the same stretch that you described. One of my planned stops was Angel Degadillo's Barber Shop in Seligman. He had been called the "Barber of Route 66" in the stuff I had been reading. Stopped and got a hair cut. Angel had to be in his 80's at the time. He asked about the roadster and told him I was on my way back to <ST1:pFlorida</ST1:p and had read about him in the Route 66 books and magazines and wanted to have a hair cut by the Barber I had been reading about. Glad I did. Heard he has retired but I hope he is still there watching the Hot Rods, Harleys, and motor homes roll through town. Thanks again.<O:p</O:p
    I'm really glad this got pulled back to the top or I would have missed a great piece of writing.
    After reading I'm pretty sure that "roadster" is synonymous with "soul".
    Good stuff.
    C9 just read your story, what a wounderful way to spend a day. Glad you shared your story. I just got a t-bucket this last year and retired at the same time looking for the weather here to break so I can take a ride like yours, only thing is I have to wait till about May or June, as we just got 12" of snow here last night in Indiana. Thank you for the ride.
    Jay, wonderful read as always. I felt I was right there in the p***enger seat.
    As I've told you on the HAMB before my one and only trip on Rt.66 was the stretch from Kingman to Seligman and back in a rental in 1996 when my wife and I were on vacation out there.
    I now have a '34 roadster and I love driving it toples or not but the New England weather limits how much use I get out of it.
    Right now,it's snowing like crazy and there is about a foot of fine powder on the ground. The roadster is snug under it's cover in the garage and when I get itchy for spring to come,I punch up the videos that my son took of us taking it for a ride last summer.
    Thanks for making my day. Now I've got to go snowblow this white stuff out of the driveway.
    Thanks Jay. Especially nice due to the fact that we've had winter here for a couple months now. I like winter, there's lots to do that you can't do any other time, but reading your story reminds me of why i am happy to get back to the warm weather too. A fresh snowfall is winding down right now, just a skiff really, about four inches, but it's on top of the 14 or so inches on the ground already. Reminds me that I only have a few weeks left to enjoy the winter stuff, then back to hot rods on the road. BTW if you really like beer that tastes like BEER try New Castle Brown Ale; imported from England and tastes like beer used to taste before Budweiser put all the real brewers out of business. Don't know if you can find it there, but I've bought it in N.Carolina and Michigan so it must be somewhat widespread.
