Ive been thinking about getting another Dayton area HAMB Meet & Greet together for sometime in the summer, like in June. What Ive been thinking about will take some planning, but will be VERY cool. Instead of just hanging out and eating, why not get together and DO something together? What Ive been thinking about is slightly O/T, but still worthy of attention. Many know that the USAF Museum here in town. This place has some of the nations coolest Air Force related history in it. Everything from a Wright B Flyer replica, (The real one is in Washington so I guess thats ok) to space travel craft. Admittance to the Museum is free. And to arrange a guided tour is free too. Now for the best part - I have a friend who works at the Museum and dig this, he works in the RESTORATION CENTER! He said that they do tours there TOO! FOR FREE!!! The only down side is that the Restoration Center tours are only done on Fridays. So my question is; How many faithful HAMBers in the area, (or outside and are willing to commit) are willing to take a Friday off to hang out with fellow HAMBers and see some of Americas historical aircraft? Oh, did I mention that the Restoration Center is currently working over the one and only Memphis Belle? My buddy Brian said that they have one wing done and plenty more to do; enough to keep him working for the next year or two. If we do this on June 12th, thats the same weekend as the Goodguys 21st Hot Rod Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. This could make it so that we get more folks then who might not otherwise attend a Dayton M&G and thats great too. It might make it easier to excuse the extra day off work. You could always pass it off as a patriotic thing to your boss. Heres what Id like; Id like to know how many are willing to commit to a Friday in June. If I can get at least 12 to commit, (this can be HAMBers, spouses and so on so one family can make up half of this), Ill make all the arrangements with the Museum for both tours. Ill even try to nail down someplace to eat a late breakfast/early lunch. Theres a Bob Evans just a couple miles away. When I call the Museum, I know that Ill need names and a total head count. We can add to that but I know the frown upon having less then what was stated. Vance
Yeah, but that's two days earlier. While Dayton is a pretty interesting city, it's not interesting enough to ask someone to hang out for two days.
I probably could make it. My daughters last day of school is June 10th so it would free me up for the 12th.
I'd like to go but the smell of burning rubber and fuel at Indy would be calling me plus Spam at Bubba's that evening.
Unless you're planning on traveling to Indy, the vast majority of the Indy guys will be busy with the Good Guys weekends festivities. June 10th - open house at Panareas's shop in Jamestown. June 11th - open house at GodSpeed June 12th - Spam O' Rama at Bubba's Hot Rod Shop June 13th - cookout at Culbertsons Customs
Wow. I think we should all just move to Indy. Sounds like a happening place. Billetproof Detroit is 6/6/09. Come on up!
Yep, I'll be in Indy as well that weekend. I'm really looking forward to Spam at Bubba's. Mike, Big Chief, had a good idea if in fact your buddy is working that Friday of Memorial weekend. Since Brian, BlkTopBandit is having is huge bash on that Saturady, and there are folks coming into Dayton that weekend from all over, why not see if Friday May 22nd is available for the tour. Seems like you might get more folks from out of state if you bundle it with a whole weekend worth of fun. Just a thought.
I'll check on May 22nd. However, when I was looking at the events listing on the HAMB's Event calendar, Brian's gig wasn't listed. My buddy at the museum said that things are usually booked about a month out and worse in the summer, hense the June date. Since I was in June, I went for the GG tie-in.
