Hoping for some help from some of you painters please. I would like to know if I can add a pearl to the ppg dcu 2042 clear? Their pdf says that it cannot be tinted but I would think that adding pearl would not be tinting. Thank you in advance. Fourdy
You can but it is not a good idea. If you add pearl to the final clear you will not be able to sand and buff it plus it will be very hard to get even. Put your pearl into some intercoat clear such as PPG DBC500 and it will spray like a basecoat, then clear with your 2042.
Thanks again. The reason I was asking is that I am painting the fenders on my 24 T PPG Dark Cherry with 2042 clear. Sanded and buffed it is absolutely beautiful until you get into the sun. Then - - - - thousands of tiny speckles in the clear. Whitish in color. I chased a couple of runs and the runs are even thicker with specks making me believe that it is not dust or foreign material. Napa thought it might be bad clear or catalyst. Thinking was that I could sand the clear then shoot dbc500 with pearl and maybe hide the speckles rather than repaint the color base and start over. Any thoughts? Fourdy
Sounds like solvent poping. Once you cut the bubbles, you get White specks. Also, could be bad Catalyst. I'd take most of the Clear off and start from there is there are no more specks once most of the Clear is taken down. Pearl coat and clearcoat after that. Good Luck, VR&C.
You have a case o solvent pop for sure. As said, you'll need to sand it down almost till all the clear is off. The pop starts at base coat and works it's way up. Not enough flash time between base and clear or wrong solvent. Like using DT 870 in the base and 895 in the clear.
Thanks again. I don't use different thinners. Used 870 for all but may have not waited long enough between base and clear. Specs say 5-15 minutes so I probably should give it more time like 30 min to an hour. Once again I find that my learning curves are straight up but I'm still having fun. This shows the color scheme. Take into account humidity and time of day for dry/flash points. In a pinch you could use the same clear/pearl technique you tried. Just be sure to top it with plenty of straight clear. Keep us updated.
We mainly use 885 at the shop. Using 870 is more for spot repairs. If you find a PPG rep, i'm sure he/she will agree not to use 870.
you can put pearl in the the clear just spray a couple coats of regular clear over it to give you something to sand and buff. I know a guy that does it this way because he says it makes it look deeper than a mid coat. As far as it goes on reducer I was told it works of temp like 870 is for 70 degree weather and 885 is for 85 degree weather but I tend just to use 885 works good. good luck I give atleast 30 min between base and clear.
