Few more from SEMA . Will be home tomorrow and back to work on Monday. The 29 by Troy just gets me excited! Best I’ve ever seen. Blue
Not much to show . I got all the parts I needed to finish up the gas tank fill and cut the hole for the filler . Block sanded all day and may be ready for paint on Sat. If not it will be middle of next week because of weather forecast . Tuesday may me warm but I’ve got to go get a nuclear stress test . Have gathered a lot of parts to install after paint . Latter , Blue
Been having a garage board meeting this week . I have a few spots to finish in the morn. I will reapply primers in afternoon if warm enough . Look like lots of plastic but the thickest is less than 1/64 . Got about 20 hours in hammer and dolly work and 25 hours of sanding and it’s still not perfect but will be good enough for a driven rod . Will try to paint on Thursday if weather stays good .
Well the board meeting ended sooner than expected. A 20 foot shiny paint job is coming up . 2 more coats of epoxy and two high build coats of primer applied . Hope to sand and paint in the morn . Body looks good for 88 yo. Backing in the sun . I’m ready to get it back together! I hate sanding ...... Blue
Shot sealer and then followed with paint . Had a slight problem . Sealer looked great , had tinted to same color I was going to shoot . Cleaned my gun loaded paint and sure enough when I shot my first mist coat I had forgotten to squirt on my test board . Well bad light and same color and a bunch of runs ! Caught it after one side but damage done . Adjusted gun and second side was nice . Let it flash a little longer than normal and finished putting two more heavy coats on . Let it dry for 36 hours and went out this morn and shaved all the runs and sags and it looks like I’ll be able to cut and buff it out and save it . Had to get away from it for a while so drove my 39 to town for a car and art car show . Good time and lots of junk food . The paint dried a much brighter color . Still need to do doors and trim . Blue
You can never have too much light when painting, it sure sucks to try to paint with not enough light though!
Painted three cars in the same spot , think I’m just getting old and can’t see anymore . Oh well only got three more projects to do . If I could find a good painter around here I’ld farm it out and stick to playing with my power hammer and bead roller . Blue
Thank you for the help . What I really need to invest in is exaust fans and lights . If I was younger I would get a paint booth .
Well the doors totally stripped and epoxied today, since it warmed up some . Will do the body work tomorrow and hope to put color on also . Really need to make some new skins for them and probably will make some when I get done with the COE . I’ll hammer and dolly them but awfull thin . Maybe in the spring . Blue
Went out to work on the doors and paint was still soft . So not wanting to watch paint dry , I cut up some 18g galvanized metal and stretched ,after laying it out , on power hammer then beadrolled . Temped in , need to shrink a few places tomorrow and rivet in . Then back on doors . Blue
Wind blowing like a hurricane and cool. Got doors ready for last coat of primer. Maybe this afternoon . Sand and paint color tomorrow. I hate doing paint prep .!!!!!' Just part of the deal I guess . When I finish painting the COE ! I’m done with doing paint . Will take out a loan or something for my wife’s 59 wagon. Blue
Two warm days in a row , must be global warming. LOL primed the doors again and sanded them and trim . Painted the doors , trim , and back area of body where I sanded through to primer getting rid of a run . I HATE DOING PREP AND PAINT ! Can't see as good as when I was young . My dad told me I would go blind . Will start on inside in morning. Blue
Ok , I got the rear floorboards Huck riveted in after coating everything with seam sealer. Mounted and adjusted new shifter . Started figuring the mounts for the seat . Trying to get it aslow as possible with the adjusters on . Need to figure out how to keep passenger seat low but be able to tilt whole seat up for access to rear . Any idea ‘s out there from You Tudor owners . Can’t do front floor till I get this rat nest of wiring redone . I forgot to order a new harness so I will jump on the inside rear area while I wait . Really would like some response on pass seat . Blue
The factory hinges are pretty nice. I'm guessing you don't have them. http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/seat-parts?attrYear=1930&pn=seat-parts&t=&q=&page=2&perpage=
T's had nice ones too, taller though. Some of the racing seat belt eye bolts are similar to the short A posts. You might have them in stock, I think I do.
Cold here today , so I started working on the gas tank . To do my cutting without getting chips inside I coated everything in grease and put a magnet inside next to hole and on the hole saw . Cut it on the side with the top pointed down . Worked great . Only got about 20 little chips inside that I can find . After doing all the chip making , I put the backup ring in and spot welded in place . Mounted the fuel gauge sender also . Ready to be installed as soon as it warms up enough to seam seal and insulation. Note all the chips above . Below I used a file backwards so chips came out, did this upside down. Cleaned out inside with vacuum cleaner, magnet, and a duct tape mop on a stick . Worked great . Blue
That car is starting to look good. Now you might run it to the restorer types who whine that you "ruined" a perfectly good Model A.
Seems pretty unlikely the world will ever run out of A Models. Lots of them running about in far better than new condition. Right down to fenders that are waxed on the inside. I'd say, cut up... uhm, modify as many as you can afford to, haha. Anyone can restore one to Henry specs., just follow along with the books. We need more cool ones that are hand built and full of the owners ideas, even ratty ones often have some really good ideas.
Seems to work fine , havent had it long . Should be fine since the door is so light . My 39 and42 trucks only have two hinges and much heavier. Ask again in 6 months. Blue
I would think that 2 hinges should be plenty. There are very few roads anymore like the ones these cars were built to use. My dad bought my sedan in 1954 (94 bucks and change) and it was his daily driver until mid 1960. He took it out in the woods moose hunting every year and a lot of the time he didn't need no steenkeeng road, haha. It's loose and everything rattles, but the doors stay perfectly aligned (when it's on relatively flat ground). I'm thinking these cars are plenty tough enough for modern usage even without all the hinges.
The Hobart has been good , first mig a bought . I like it because it has a purge for whatever gas your using. I also have a Miller 211 mig and a Miller 185 tig which I love . I have the Hobart loaded with 22 wire and the Miller filled with 35 .works good for me . On a side note , Miller has big rebates going on right now .
I used to have a Millermatic 135 but sold it two years ago thinking I would never use it again...and now I wish I still had it! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Haha, punkabilly, that seems to be a common problem. I got pretty good leadership from my dad on that when I was in my early teens. He had an old South Bend lathe for a few years and hardly used it. Someone talked him into selling it to them. Several times over the next few years he told me, "I oughta have my ass kicked for selling that lathe. Never sell a tool unless you've already replaced it with a better one.". I must have taken it to heart, I never sell anything, haha. Most everything that makes it to my shop has made a one way trip. Blue, you are really well tooled. Impressive.
