There sure is a lot to see in that pre-war shot. Just now reading the post by loudbang. It tells us that the pic is post-war. The other parked cars look to be war survivors, not new.

The pump doesn't directly pump fuel. It pressurizes the fuel tank. I used one for years on a 10-gallon tank in the back of my roadster with six 97s on a SBC. The system had a pressure gauge on the dash. Just a couple of hits when the tank is full, a lot more when it was almost empty.
