Hey guy i would like to lower my 62 comet 1 more inch in the back. I have 4 inch lowering blocks in it now. I would like to lower it by dearching the springs. How do you do that. Any other suggestions on lowering it besides airbags or anything like that. Thanks Nate
posies said they would make me a set of springs for $240. you really can't dearch at home you have to have a humongus press. and it's very dangerouse, find a place that deals in auto springs.
i thought you jacked the rear enxd up until the arch you want and relocate the rear shackle? Geuss im wrong? Thanks Nate
You can de-arch your springs at home without a press and its not dangerous at all.Also how many leafes do you have in there now.You could prolly take one out.I built a lil device that works on my vice to de-arch and tune leafsprings.I also fine tune springs in it for racecars. Its a lil hard to explain on a computer so I'll do a tech thread on it later today.I'll show how to make my jig etc. Another note,its totally dangerous to have that much of a lowerig block in your car!Nothing should be hanging below your rim ........shiny

Can you move your leaf mounts up?how many leafs you got.Can you take a few out?You might be able to revers the main leaf and get another inch or two lower.I'd prolly only use a maximum 3" block.Then do the other things to get it down.....Shiny
How much room do you have between the top of the rear end and the rear rails / floor? Seems like you would be running out of room with the 4" blocks.
you can flatten the spring with a BFH. Just remove the springs from the car and take out the main leaf. Lay it on its side and draw the arch on the ground. Then start beating the curved side against the piece of railroad track on your bench...you do have one don't you?? Anyway...beat it evenly until it has the desired shape....then redraw it on the ground and beat the other one to match. DO NOT USE HEAT!
Who was it on here who made the tool for dearching springs? It clamps in a vise. Looks like two 3/4"(???) round rods on the outer edges on one pad of the vise, and one 3/4" rod in the middle of the other rod. You squeeze the spring between them, working back and forth on the spring.

Also, when you do dearc the springs, do it enough so you can get rid of those blocks that make the car a road grading death trap if you get a flat tire. Nothing should hang below the rim. I don't care if you aren't afraid to die, it's the people in the cars near you when you lose control and take the whole highway to stop I'm concerned about.
Have you thought about installing airbags on the rear? It's a little pricier...but a hell of a lot safer. That way you could go as low as you'd like.
pul the springs, clamp them with a couple big c clamps, unbolt the center bolt, take one leaf out, flip it over, and bolt the pack back together. I'm sure there's a reason you're not supposed to do this, and I'm sure someones gonna let me know what that reason is, but I've done it a couple times with no problems.
Brewsir, do you need to re-arch all the springs or just the main spring?I've also been told its best to use a brass hammer. ?
I would do just the main and then I would also leave out one of the middle leafs (or two) Never heard about the brass hammer....i am not sure it is hard enough to do the job...I would be using a sledge myself.
what about useing a front spring off of a 70's or 80's chevy 4x4. they are factory dearched. but i don't know about length or eyelet size.
