My father has told stories of a dirt track driver from the Cleveland or Chattanooga TN area named Ivan Stevens. (I think that is the correct name) He ran a green race car with number 13 on it and had a black cat on the car someplace, dad said that it didn't slow him down any.

I'll be 59 here in a couple days and I'm somewhat different and defiant, most of my peers view me as "a bit on the wierd side" because I have a hot rod....and my wife has a hot rod too. We'd rather go for a cruise in one of our cars rather than go out for fine cuisine and old wine at some fancy-schmancy restaurant. I've been Retrorod before retrorods were "in"........were they ever "in"??

  3. Then you should use the number 13 and carry a bag of peanuts.

As for your silly screen name, does ol' Satan serve pork & beans in hell?

    Kidding

  4. OK, it's just grasping at things that are thought of as BAD because we live in a country that still has a puritan idea of good and bad.... It's all in that Image of being bad that so many find there identity .... so what! IS image everything ?

Personal opinion as a history buff: during WWII our military laughed at death by mocking hell and Satan. This graveyard machismo manifested itself on aircraft nose art, unit nicknames (Hell on Wheels, Hell's Angels, etc) and unit mottos. The WWII veterans who really kick started hot rodding after the war incorporated this same devil-may-care attitude in their club and car names. I'm a Christian and am into skulls, bones and iron crosses. I consider them to be a major part of traditional hot rodding. I'm not into Coop's devil themes but don't consider them Satanic worship. Just roddin'.

Personally I've never made the connection from liking and driving old cars to Satan and death. I see it as a common theme on the board and in the culture in general but have never really gotten into the mentality. I've always thought those of us who drive and love old cars and hot rods are considered a little different than the mainstream (definately not a bad thing). I've never understood how one off the mainstream activity (loving old cars) got linked to another off the mainstream topic (satan, the devil, etc).

I do like the post about WWII and mocking death in a dangerous situation but I've never made the connection to driving and playing with old cars. Facing death and mocking it like the soldiers in WWII is understandable to me but I don't feel that big of death defiying rush driving my old car to work everyday or wrenching on it.

  12. Actually I'm a Santa-ist.

It's sorta like Satanism, except instead of death and devils and hellhounds, we have elves and reindeer and cookies.

  15. It's demeaning, I would not portray myself or my image to my grandkids by putting forth such a pessimistic outlook. I think it would be a tremendous disservice to them for me to project a death-wish image, or an anti-good image, that is to appear to support evil, and to wear it as a badge of honor. Therefore, "New trend" or not, it's associated with the blaming of one's self for not having a optimistic outlook on life in general. I can't believe that someone's car could be the complete center of their life, and then the manistifation of that, to give it a sub-cultural name. I cherish the fact that I have the ability to do the things I do on my ride. I wouldn't demean that ability by giving it a negative name.

  25. But no posts by satanherself, that guy who's handle ends in 666 or 1evil51. Just Tingler, Bleed (Sounds like bleeding heart liberal to me) and Nads (short for Nadeem). Oh and you other guys. Maybe I need to wait until after dark? Scary Larry is now SCARED?? Me? I'm even more puzzled.

  26. Where can I buy a crybaby doll in a devil costume? Or get a tattoo of a plastic cheeseburger? Can I find the answer by playing Earth Angel on 45 rpm backwards? Does it have anything to do with skate boarding?

"up jumped the devil" lol,,,actually my SN has nothing to do with my involvement in cars and bikes..Come from being in the music biz,,and just having a liking for art ,and such in what some consider a "darker" nature.

I can see how the old hot rod days kinda picked up the lil devil logo's
and the whole kids being JD's and such,,but think thats more a fun thing.

As for the 666 and all,,I think some of the "goth" culture has met the rat rod culture,,and that might have something to do with it.. Least nowadays

But yeah back it the day ,bad kids ,,not going to church, drinking, hot rods,,had to be the devil ;)
