thanks for all the replys, i know i will get this right.... first things first, it has been a very low speeds only havnt taking it any faster, its my first build, learning as i go....
heres the latest, after talking to an old nascar guy,he sujested to adjust the tire pressure in the right front 2 1/2 psi so far so good no wobble, we will see later....
I thought that this thread had been pretty much addressed. Now Flathead 31 this is going to sound like getting smacked in the head with a 2 x4 but until you get with the mind set that you have to do something about that drag link angle first, your car is going to drive like ****. Your latest suggestion of creating an imbalance in tire pressure will only fine tune something when its correct, like driving on severely crowned roads. This will not cure your screwed up steering. I realize that it is not easy to junk something that you worked hard on but it is not correct and no matter what magic bullet you hope to find its not going to happen. If you want to putz around at 20mph or hang on for dear life at 50, fine, go ahead its your car. If you get that drag link under the header and close to parallel with the lower radius rod it will start to drive better and you will appreciate your car. You might have to forget the cowl steering and go to a Pickup box or remake the headers and lower the steering box if you want that old time look. No matter what you do, the steering that you have now will be plain uncomfortable to drive.. If you have to ask questions you can call me and I'll try to help you out.
Some of us out there are reading this to help them on there first build like me.Ride a motorcycle with the front wheel at varius tire pressures it will change the way the bike handles alot. Use to use string to center the rear wheel and guys would look at me and wonder what i was doing and tell me to just count threads. then they rode my bike and asked me to do the same to theirs.Had some head shake one time that drove me nuts and i couldnt figure it out, ended up being off by one foot pound on the neck. land a wheele crossed up now thats death wobble i will be doing every thing that **** said to doy before i even take mine for the first spin
I have to say that **** is a god. Man, you know your **** brotha! EDIT - I know somebody is gonna laugh at the first sentance and it will probably show up somewhere!
I need to jump in here. My willys race car has paralell leaf spring straight axle in front with tube axle, reversed iron corvair box, paralell drag link about 24inches long. all new everything, 4x15 frt wheels with disc brakes and 4.5x26 hooseir front runners new and g***er type 10 spoke bolt on wheels . when we scaled the car the ch***is man needed to get weight off of the lr and took two springs out of the right front. which gave us the perfect weight on the rear corners and the car leaves straight and hard and goes straight as an arrow no problem. now the problem. on one occasion i ran the quarter mile (usually 1/8th and lifted after run at 118 mph, and wobble like i have never felt for about 1500 ft . we checked everything possible and found the frt tires had only 22 lbs each. aired them to 39 and made a 1/8 pas and lifted and braked and no problem, put a dampner on next week and no more problem. question is will it come back could the tire pressure be the culprit? or can the lack of springs on rt frt cause it. my corner weights are all just right with me in the car now... thanks great thread , and i hate to jack it sam
Experience from a different direction. My F350 4x4 developed a bad wobble. It was the OEM "tracker" bar (aka Panhard bar) bushings (this after fixing the tierods and checking everything else out). Keep in mind this is a strong parallel leaf suspension, but the springs couldn't control the wobble...in fact, the springs stored the energy and released it as the axle moved left and right - making the wobble more violent over time. Ford engineers knew this from the get-go... For my $, a steering damper is just a flexible Panhard bar... .
Wow, Year's back ,bought and drove a early B/alterd ,first full hard p*** was a handfull. The wobble was so bad it would make your eyes tear! If this thread was around and I was not in as much of a hurry,it would of saved me much time and money. We finally did get it straight , not the easy way. We are never to old to learn, thanks **** and all the others for p***ing the knowledge in detail ! I think its time to make a Hamb "how to book", with all smart guys out there!
