My dad's family was typical of many families of that era.

Art, his oldest brother was killed on the Arizona. His name is inscribed on the memorial. His body was never identified.

    During 1942,

Al enlisted in the army. Served in the artillery in Italy. Celebrated his 90th birthday this year.
Frank enlisted in the army. Was discharged for medical reasons before being shipped overseas.
Dad was rejected by the navy, accepted by the army as a glider mechanic. Was discharged for medical reasons beforing being shipped overseas.

Now for the rest of the story-

Art was born in mid 1918. He was named for his mothers oldest brother Art S. Who (along with two brothers) enlisted in the AEF to fight the war to end all wars. Art S. was declared KIA at 8 am on November 11, 1918 (armistice day).

Some families have given a lot for their country.

I wasn't born until 1978. But I am the proud grandson of two Grandfathers that flew in B-17's in WWII. One was shot down over Germany and became a POW, and the other flew 36 missions. Unfortunately they have both since passed on, but their love and sacrifice for this Country have not been forgotten.

If you are lucky enough to still have a Father or Grandfather that served, let them know that their sacrifices have not been forgotten.

    REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR!

  7. Thanks to all who have served, those who are serving, and those who will serve the USA in the future, to protect the freedoms that we enjoy.

I wasn't born till '49, but my dad was flying over Germany doing his job during the war.
He never talked about it either, except for his dislike of men from certain European countries who wouldn't fight for their countries and would trade sides, depending on who was winning.

I should mention my grandfather who was gassed at Vimy Ridge in the first big one. He died of lung cancer in '57. And fortunately all four of my uncles came home from the second world war.

I was on patrol last night and was asked why the flag was at half mast. Bit my lip and then explained it to the person. It will never be forgot.

I was trying to put the "Results" on this thread (Signing the end of WWII on Missouri deck), but the video wouldn't transfer to HAMB.----Oh well.

  12. I'm 45 and have had the opportunity to work with a Navy South Pacific vet and a Marine corpman that was on Gualdalcanal. I have met men that fought in Bataan, Iwo Jima, Belguim, etc because the VA has a center not far from where I work. I'm a peacetime vet. I salute all that have given their life or part of their life for our country.
