After seeing cactus1's thread on his sprintcar build, I will post some pictures of a similar build from the mid '80s from misc parts. Tframe, 33 ford rear, dropped axle in front, '50 Merc engine, and homemade body. The pictures are roughly in sequence and will be posted in groups. Any questions can be answered in the following post. dechrome
Fantastic! Thanks so much for taking the time to scan the pics and create this thread! Do you have any shots of the finished ****pit? Specifically the footwell area and how it relates to the pedals and steering gear? Also, I ***ume you went with juice brakes since you made some concessions for street use no? Oh, and what did you do for a radiator?
And a third. The quick change is just a cover make in Louisville ky. My daughter hand painted the Lucky Lady since they weren,t available in the 80s. Took a picture of the parts to chrome to make sure that I got them all back. That was $300 then.
A few more. First pic was first Indy Gooduys. Two on the track. Three Home strip in Terre Haute. Four and five highlight Garlets and friend at Wentsville, Mo. Nostalia Drags. Six Twenty fifth anniversary of Street Rod Nationals Peoria, Il.
In post #8, right side of car shows little bit of steering box setup. What is steering box and angle from wheel to box? How does it steer on the street? Great looking car - love it.
The steering box is from a 50 mercury used to steer the right side due to rotation. The steering wheel shaft is mounted on a double bearing sleeve and has a short connecting shaft with U joints to connect to the offset box. The steering wheel has a short section of Ford driveshaft sleeve as a hub and the shaft is a driveshaft with spline. A pull pin through the rivet hole allows a quick release for the homemade wheel. dechrome
A few more shots of vintage racing at Indianapolis Raceway park. While attending a car show in Brownsburg, I was told that vintage racing was going on just down the road at IRP. Well racing is better than showing. For $20 I joined the club and a friendly sole let me borrow a fire suit and helmet. What a blast running the track with Indy cars, sprinters, midgets and speedsters. One picture is of the crew, Oldrod on the HAMB and my college pledge son. The firesuit was big enough for two but worked just fine. dechrome
There was no extension on the sector shaft hence the need for the U joints and stub steering shaft. dechrome
The Mercury sector shaft is maybe 10 in long, and with the narrow body didn't need to be lengthened. There is maybe 2 in misalignment with the input shaft and the steering wheel shaft. The ch***is picture below the scallop drawing shows it best if you can enlarge that area. There were no modifications to the steering box. dechrome
Lucky grandkid - both cars are great. Thanks for steering info - love details. Were u smiling on the track? Do bears do it - - - ...
