Look at it this way... you'll know lots about the Ford 8"... and in the future you can use that info. to win friends and influence people.

Welcome to the 8" tugger club! I rebuilt my 8" last winter. Your going to have to beat off your 8" pinion, ok ok enough jokes! I rebuilt mine also, it was used and free. I put new bearings in it etc. The key is getting the lash and the pinion crush correct. Mine sat for a while and was actually rusted so it wouldn't spin!!! But some cleaning and scraping and it works, no whine or anything. If you need any help I found some good sites about rebuilding I can forward to you.

Defeat sucks, but I do like the smell of 90 wt in the morning. Sometimes I dab a little behind my ears.:D

but seriously, I just did the same thing with a 9 inch. It howls just a little around highway speed. I am going to convince myself that it is a quickchange whine. At least for a while.

I have rebuilt both an 8" and a 9". Get a motors manual with all the specs and a dial indicator and it isn't that bad, just lots of readjusting everything so all the clearences are happy at the same time.

Ahh, just look at it as a temporary setback, plus like the guys say, you're learnding.

Gotta pass on Ratster's deal today, something unexpected came up - a temporary setback.

Tingler, Make sure the pinion nut hasn't backed off, a loose pinion will make growl pretty good. If the pinion nut is good check the torque on the ring gear, and check the wear pattern on the teeth. Your an artistic person, grab some prussian blue oil paint and check the mesh between the ring and pinion. If the ring and pinion are tight and the teeth show an even central wear pattern you probably need some new bearings.

Don't ask me how I know this but...........some ford diff. housings had a magnet in them to help collect wear/sedament. If said magnet gets knocked loose and makes contact with the moving internals it will cause a howl.
