    Hey gang,

I'm rebuilding/restoring a generator/power steering combo from a '57 Chevy to run in my '56. I'm getting a lot of mixed results from internet searches, so I thought I'd ask the real experts found here on the HAMB.

Basically, the end frames of the generator - one is cast iron and the other is aluminum - were those originally painted, or were they left bare metal? Mine was so rusty and gunk covered that it was impossible to tell, and I've seen so many variations on the Web that I have no idea how these things looked originally. Anyone know for sure?

    Thanks!

Drive end frames were natural if it is aluminum, commutator (brush end) was painted.
Here is a before and after tach drive generator we restored for a 1957 Corvette.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed. So the commutator end (the cast iron piece) is painted semi-gloss black like the case?
