    I'm in the same boat, 283, no generator, need a mech. tach drive.

    Yes you may change the six volt to 12 by simply changing the voltage regulator. Although they do make 12 volt field coils etc they are not needed and the generator doesnt really know the difference between 6 and 12 volts , thats the regulators job.
    Done it many times .

    Thanks Bubba, good to know. So its even easier than I thought. Next question, are there generators from 6 volt applications that have the drive for the power steering pump sticking out the back? Anybody know how far back they made generators with the drive sticking out the back?

    No. "L" is November. Chevrolet didn't use the letter "I" in their date code...don't know why. They went from "H to "J".

    A = Jan
    B = Feb
    C = Mar
    D = Apr
    E = May
    F = Jun
    G = Jul
    H = Aug
    J = Sep
    K = Oct
    L = Nov
    M = Dec
