I have 'em on 3 cars and 2 motorcycles here in AZ.
Sometimes you have to tell them the rules but always get it done.

Try the N. Scottsdale office--If anyone gives you a hard time tell them to go get Judy.

    Here's the law:

28-2487. Model year date license plates:

An owner of a vehicle that is eligible for registration pursuant to section 28-2483 or 28-2484 may use a license plate previously issued by this state with the date of the year corresponding to the model year date when the vehicle was manufactured in lieu of the license plates issued pursuant to section 28-2483 or 28-2484. To qualify for the license plate authorized by this section:
    1. The department shall approve the license plate and determine that the model year date license plate is legible and serviceable and that the license plate numbers do not conflict with other numbers currently assigned to license plates issued by the department. The department may consult with an organization of old car hobbyists in determining whether the date of the year of the license plate to be used corresponds to the model year date when the vehicle was manufactured.
    2. The owner of the vehicle shall comply with the requirements for the registration of the vehicle.

I have them on two cars here as well. In my experience, almost none of the DMV offices know how to do the old plates, they try to enter the number in the computer and it won't allow them to go any further. What they need to do is call the main Phoenix office and talk to the lady in charge of the specialty plate program, she can enter your plate in the system there. When she does, the office you are at can then run it through their system. I don't remember what her name was, but if you call the main office and ask them, you should be able to find out her name and extension and tell your office who to call to get it done.

Hey man I have some close friends that own a third party DMV office called Desert Auto Title. They specialize in this type of stuff, alot of the title work they do is for auction cars, like the 200k muscle car stuff. It will cost you a convenience fee, maybe $20 or so, but if you want it done right they will handle it. Call them and ask for Brandi or Shelley. Brandi's the cute one though. :) Oh and make sure you tell them that Keith sent you.

She's not the supervisor, (They are clueless bureaucrats) but she is the person who the supervisors all go to when the rulebook is a dead end.

She actually tries to help people, rather then using the rulebook to find ways to get out of helping people.

Another thing- Check your license number on the personalized plate search on their website and you can see if the number is good or already taken.

FYI: Plan B: a YOM plate just shows as a special plate on your registration. You can get a personalized plate with the number from your old plate and then just use the old plate. If a cop runs your plate # it comes back as a special plate registered to you and the right car.

Sounds to me like the burden of proof the plate isn't being used or stolen is on DMV. They need to do their job.

Ask very politely if there is someone there that knows anything or gives a shit. Where I used to live in eastern Oklahoma there was one employee in the whole place that knew how to deal with unusual situations. When you went to the DMV office you looked in and if you didn't see her, you left and came back later. She once titled a Triumph 650 Trophy bike for me with a bill of sale written on a napkin.

Defeats some of the purpose. By using YOM or Antique plates here in MI you qualiify for a huge discount on insurance esp. if you use a specialty company. Save several hundred dollars per year. Also YOM tags u pay once ($35.00) and never again. Personalized plates are $50.00 per year. This is MI so AZ may be different but I'm sure it is similiar.

Nope, same price per year and no insurance benefit.

But, in AZ if you have "classic car insurance" Hagerty, Grundy etc...and either Antique, Classic, or YOM plates you are exempt from emissions testing ('67 and up cars)

Sorry to bring up a old thread but there was some good info in here. I have a question about the AZ antique plates. I read that the plates ran in series (56-58, 59-60, 61-63, 64-65 etc.) The statute says "determining whether the date of the year of the license plate to be used corresponds to the model year date when the vehicle was manufactured." Does that mean that the plate # had to be issued in that year or that the plates that you are registering have to be from that series? My case 56-58 for the 1958 Apache and 64-65 for the 1965 Riviera? Also does anybody know if there was a special plate in '58 for light pick-ups or do I use the same passenger car plate as the rest?

Skyshark, that's a good question ... let us know what you find out. My YOM plate is 1949, before they used the multi-year series, so I'm no help at all.

  24. Really should make a new thread for questions like that, because 10 guys won't see this is a five year old thread that's already been resolved and answer the first post and never see the new question.

If yours falls in the multiply year plate then you need a plate in that time and you will also need the extra year metal plate. You will need both metal plates. Here is one that I found for a 51[IMG]

Years ago, I tried to register a 1935 plate on my three window. I asked about it at the DMV and they told me I could if I restored the plate. I asked what the colors were and they told me gold with black numbers. I restored it, took it back to them and they said, no, it had to be copper color with black numbers. I politely asked them two questions. First, who would know what color a 1935 plate was, and second, wasn't the purpose of the plate so the arresting officer could read the numbers. After me trying to be a smart ass, they said, hey, he's right, issue the plate. Coulda knocked me over with a feather. So, I'm the guy with the gold and black plate on a '35 Ford.
