Hope it doesn't go against the image to say what a nice guy he is, but that is one super nice dude! Good buddies like Jeff Myers too.
And here I was, ""Some Polished Ivory College Kid"" with his sorority-girl girlfriend trying his damnedest to be a hot-rodder !!! ----I wish I could have seen the look on your faces !!! >>>>.
Great Post another great artist I have always wanted to meet..........and hopefully get him to sign the door on the boogie van someday
Forget Dennis! Lets talk about Bunny... hubba hubba! The woman behind the man... hahahaaaa. Dennis was the guy who told me bout the Hamb. We were in Paso years ago and he said we had to check out the Hokey Ass Message Board, I was sure it was comical. Been here ever since! Dennis is a Dr. Pepper...
Wow, just went back and read that interview... so cool. He has one special family, so great to see him on top. He deserves the best! Shoe sucks!!!
Dennis is hands down one of my favorite people on earth. Although he has an intimidating appearance, he is one of the nicest, most humble and talented people I know. His Wife Bunni is amazing as well. Lucky for me, over the years I have been able to purchase and barter for some of Dennis' work. He stopped by a few years back with his Kansas Posse and realized how much of his past resides at my home. When I began collecting, I had already discovered how difficult it was to "make it" as an artist. His work has always put a smile on my face. I thought if I could just buy a piece I loved, then he (or any other artist) would have enough money to make another piece that would make someone else just as happy. Sounded like a win win to me.
This is the first piece of original art I ever bought. A McPhail. I just had to have it, but was a college student and broke as fuck. Anyway, I practically went home in tears knowing I could never afford it. 6 months later I run into Dennis again, and he still had it. He didn't sell it at the other show because he wanted to paint on it more. I was still broke. I suck. Anyway, that weekend I went to Vegas with friends, and 40 bucks in my pocket. I ended up drunk as hell (not normal for me) and hit quite a streak at the black jack table. Needless to say, I called Dennis on my way home and told him I wanted to buy the rim. I paid him, but was broke yet again. Best Vegas Vegas trip EVER!!!!!!
I took care of getting some of Dennis' color posters printed for him. I got the originals, and he could make more selling the prints. Another win win. Highway gods is colored pencil. Our Lady and Charmed Life are both in one shot. A man of many talents.
I tried to be the nice guy and hook my brother up with a decklid Dennis painted. My brother dragged his feet, and James Hetfield ended up getting it. I should have bought it. My mistake......and a BIG one. Every time I see James, I tell him I plan on stealing it one day. A couple years later I got my hands on a different one, but I'm a hog and still want the other as well!!!
Hank the tank. The yellow tank still has sketch marks on it. It was supposed to be in the Mooneyes auction, but the show was shot down early due to an accident with a film crew. It was the last time the party was at Moon headquarters, and the last one Ed Roth was at (he passed a few months later). I swindled Dennis into selling it to me anyway.
I always wanted to.. just been lucky to have allot of artist close by... but i'll travel now to get Dennis... McPhail Sucks
Excellant interview and pics! Spot on, Ryan! McPhail is a great artist. I have a couple prints hanging up but nothing original. I'd be b-r-o-k-e if I did.
damn rubbish truck woke me early so i got up, turned cmputer on and found this. what a great story to start my day. itll be my inspiration for the day.
Wow. I agree with the others that have said it - this is one of the best Journal entries I've seen. I hope more of you out there with McPhail originals will post some pictures. I really enjoy seeing it. I really gotta make an effort to get to the gallery this year at the Roundup.
I heart McPhail. He's a swell guy. I met him through completely different avenues than Y'all would expect-tattoos. it was about 3 Years before I even had an inkling (hah!) that he was into cars. Dennis-Heard anything from Shea? Lux
Kick ass interview! I'm like everyone else, I think it is your best yet. Fascinating read, hope to meet Dennis someday. Thanks!
Met Dennis doing the Tattoo Convention circuit....I think I have the largest collection of signed and Pinstriped McPhail stuff in my studio.....Dennis your a great artist and builder..
I have had a man crush on Dennis for alot of years. I was honored to have him do the art work of my little car on the 07 HAMB Drags shirt. Ryan was also kind enough to give me the original pen and ink art.. To say that it is cherished wouldn't even come close. -Abone.
